Advice needed

I'm currently looking to getting a new CPU but my question is should I get the maximum my current mobo will support (Barton XP3000) or should I go the 64 bit route? Bearing in mind that I can get an XP 3000 for around £85 will it be worth the extra money for the new mobo and CPU if I went down the 64 bit route? BTW my current mobo is a MSI K7 NF2L I think!

If I were you id order a gig of registered ram, an FX51 and an asus Via mobo for yourself, only about a grand in total, then either vapochill or watercooling depending on what you have left over.

Nope, it hit me in the face like a train! Money is not really the issue, its just that with the XP3000 being so inexpensive I think ATM it would be a good upgrade from my XP2200. However, I could be tempted to go the 64bit route if someone could persuade me to fork out the extra cash!

well im not the one to persuade you to go AMD 64 right now, ive been pretty outspoken about my views on that. I suppose the cheapest option for you is to sell the 2200, and get the 3000+, if you sold the Xp2200 for what £30? cheap upgrade and you dont have to change anything else. should notice a bit of difference even at stock 2.2ghz on the 3000+. I certainly wouldnt atm go 64 bit or change your mobo to another nforce2.

A64 is good, its just overpriced atm and constantly changing. wait until it "settles" get the 3000+ for now, it will tide you over for months, cheap too.

The A64 3000+ would be a very good choice IMO. It will allow you at least a 200-250MHz OC it will murder any AXP upwards of 2.5GHz

nah A64 3000+ is pretty poor only 512k cache as well, he would have to buy a new mobo as well, then find out in 6 months he needs another cpu upgrade anyway. I dont see how paying for a 64 bit low end cpu with the same cache as a barton (which would overclock to 2.4-2.5ghz easy with a decent cooler) and having to outlay a new mobo when the new slot is coming would be classed as a good move.

Yeah thats is true, but in reviews it does very well against the other A64s and it is pretty cheap; I think it would be worth it if you're into heavy gaming But yeah, the cheapest and probably best thing to do is to just get a faster AXP and pocket the cash for now.

i myself wouldn't go for the 3000+... i'd get a 2500+ and simply up the multiplier on it to 3000+ (or simply select 3000+ ).... you'll get a very healthy boost over your 2200+
