hard drive screwing around?
guys i think one of my hard drives might be going down? just a bit ago, i came back to check my msn messages and when i clicked my computer made a sound as if a fan or a drive just wound down. i saw that all fans were working and no discs in the dvd/burner drives. after the mouse WAS moving, but stuff was working slowly and eventually freezing i rebooted stuff was really slow. then now its fine, also i tried running chkdsk in safe mode think it froze dont know.
my boot drive is a wd caviar 80gb 8mb cache, its under a yr old, my secondary 40 gig maxtor diamondmax is a bit over 2 yrs old i think 2 and a half. and my data is all on the seconday like documents music and other stuff. how can i diagnose if my hard drive is dieing? |

Maxtor has a diagnose program that does a bunch of checks..... you could also use a SMART utility and it may ..or may not tell you something... ALSO.... sounds more like it went into ...or tried to go into sleep or hibernation mode..... and failed... (windows xp pro sp1 for me brings up a message after rebooting that it will turn standby or hibernation mode off due to there being a problem the first time

You can get the Western Digital diagnostics here: WD Software Library
The Maxtor diags can be gotten here:Maxtor Software Downloads (download the PowerMax software)

also, for the last month when i first turn on my computer sometimes, for the first 5 mins theres this like sound as if a fan was dragging along. its fairly loud all the fans seem to be running at proper speeds, and my volcano 7+ can be reved up. but im gonna test the maxtor first then the WD if they are messed ive got A LOT of backing up to do espicially my songs and documents

well i did the scan, and it is indeed SCREWED bad sectors and stuff. they said that i could attempt to recover them but risk losing files. so im just gonna backup my 5 gigs of songs and another 5 gigs of stuff probably and just wait till it fails then buy a new one.
really that was a helpful program |

Well, which drive failed? The Maxtor or the WD? If it's the Maxtor, you should go online and check to see if it is still under warranty. If you have a credit card, they will send you a replacement drive. You then are responsible to put your old drive in their shipping box, and pay to send it back. You card will only be charged IF you don't send back the old drive. You'll need to have the model and serial number for your drive.
I've done this procedure a couple of times within the last 6 years, and it works great. I've not dealt with WD on their RMA process though.

the maxtor its not under warranty cause it was bought over 2 yrs ago and the warranty is finished.
the WD is brand new i nvr scanned it but i know its fine cause they have different noises, the wd is silent the maxtor makes a little noise. and when i was scanning files the other day it was creaking like an old HD |

Some of the older Maxtor's had 3 year warranties. Won't cost you anything to check it out.

check it .... you most likely still have full warranty on it..... BTW.. you mentioned the screaming hardrive..... yep..... some heads are either draging.... or something... a good sign something is dieing.... ( was actually going to ask you if you heard something like that..... as they are quit an unexplainable screech.... loud.. but not really..... odd.... but not completely... and you can't tell were the hell it comes from most of the time as if it comes from the case itself.. strange)
