Below is what my BIOS supports. You can see the various revisions to the BIOS. I have the latest. Can someone who knows their stuff have a look through the list and tell me what, after reading all the below info, is the fasted CPU my mobo can handle? And maybe what voltage the CPU will need to be. I know I have a 2 volt at the moment, but something I've seen below seems to sujgest it may well take a 1.6 volt as well ? TIA.
Maybe you could take a look at this Table - CPU Speed Setup - FREQ. RATIO, it may help you decide. I just don't understand it TIA.Gigabye - GA-6BXS File Name BIOS Version (Date) Version Description 6bxs_f2c.zip F2c (Beta) 1. Support Celeron 533A to 700 CPU(FC-PGA). (PCB revision : 1.6 or above) 2. Support 75GB HDD 3. FIX Detect SCSI device Transfer Rate error. (SCSI BIOS v2.50) 4. Fixed will show! when 1.6Vcore CPU is plugged. 6bxs_f1.zip F1 1. Support Coppermine CPU. (PCB revision : 1.6 or above) 2. Mouse Power On after shutdown from S5. 3. Slove "slow down CPU duty cycle" malfunction problem. 4. Chang CPU Vcore A/B to Vcore VGTL. Change the menu. 5. Slove DMI CPU voltage error. 6. Add new CPU Micro Code. 7. Includes AWDFLASH.EXE. 6bxs_24.zip 2.4 (Jul.02, 1999) 1. New micro code patch ID 07 for Pentium III 533Mhz,550Mhz,600Mhz. 2. this's what you got on the manual of GA-6bxs right?
Intel Pentium II/III Processor 350MHz-550MHz for 100MHz system Bus and 233-333MHz for 66MHz system buse setting as you can see on the newest bios update file.. you can go upto 700MHz !! (or even higher i'm not sure) but how to config the cpu speed setup, system bus speed and the DIP SWITCH(SW) ? you shud stop by Gigabyte's site or may be you need to talk or email the supports man. let see how ppl says about it. below is the spec of GA-6BXS : Intel 440BX AGPset Single Channel SCSI PROCESSOR Intel Pentium ® II / III Processor 350MHz-550MHz (for 100MHz system Bus) 233-333MHz (for 66MHz system buse setting) Slot 1 Socket for Future Expansion CHIPSET Intel 82440 BX AGPset Winbond 83977 I/O (1Mb/S) Winbond 83781 Health Chip Adaptec 7880 Ultra Wide SCSI CACHE MEMORY CPU Built-in 256KB/512KB L2 cache System Memory 4 x 100MHz 168-pin 3.3v DIMM sockets support Supports 8/16/32/64/128/256 MB DIMM Module Supports EDO RAM, SDRAM (Support ECC, 72 bit) Supports 8MB to 1GB DRAM Size SCSI 1 Ultra Wide SCSI and 1x Ultra SCSI port PCI IDE 2 X PCI Bus Master UDMA/33 IDE ports (up to 4 ATAPI Devices) Supports for PIO Mode 3, 4, UDMA/33 IDE & ATAPI CD-ROM I/O INTERFACE 1x floppy port (360KB-2.88MB) 2x serial ports (16550 high-speed) 1x parallel port (EPP/ECP) 2x USB EXPANSION SLOTS 4 x PCI 32-bit slots, PCI 2.2 compliant 3 x ISA 16-bit slots 1 x AGP (1x & 2x Mode,66/133MHz) slot Support Cretive PCI Sound Card SB-Link™ POWER MANAGEMENT Power On by PS/2 Keyboard, PS/2 Mouse, LAN, RTC Alarm, Modem Ring & Soft-Power Switch Power Off by Windows ® 95 Shut down & Soft-Power Switch AC Recovery On/Off Control Supports Fan Stop During Suspend Mode Supports 3 Level ACPI LED FORM FACTOR ATX Form Factor, 4 layer PCB ATX Connector on Board Double Deck ATX Back Panel PROTECTION Temperature Sensor Under Processor Heatsink Speaker Alarm When CPU Overheats or CPU Fan Failure Auto Speed Down When CPU Overheats System Health Status Detect & Report by BIOS, LDCMR & SIV Hardware Detects +/- 5v, +/-12v, CMOS Battery Voltage & CPU Voltage BIOS 2 Mbit (256KB) FLASH RAM Award PCI BIOS with Green, PnP, DMI, INT13 (HD>8.4) and Anti-Virus Functions LS120, ZIP, ATAPI CD-ROM, IDE #1, #2, #3, #4 Bootable Auto-detect & Report System Health Status DRIVER Intel LDCM ® Utility SIV Triones Ultra DMA/33 Bus Master IDE Driver Intel Ultra DMA/33 Bus Master IDE Driver |

Thx for all that info. I've tried to contact Gygabyte's customer service, but all to no avail. Their after sales service, via email is S***! They don't reply to emails.
From the information I posted above does it look like I can put a 1.65 volt P3 on this board. I'm just not sure. As I say I'm currently using a 2 volt, P2. 1.65 volt seems to be more popular. TIA.

I'm pretty sure the BX chipsets only supports 100mhz FSB & you're limited to a 850 PIII in that respect. As for the voltages: good question. I can't find a defineative answer, but I have the feeling that it will only support 2.0 & 1.75 volt CPU's.
There are adapters available ( http://www.powerleap.com/ ) that *may* allow a higher CPU, FSB & lower voltages. I gotta say with ATA/33 & only PC-100 SDRAM capabilities: you're limited anyway & a CPU upgrade will have minimal impact, IMHO. Even an 810E or 815E chipset mobo would be better & will support ATA/100, PC-133 & Tualatin PIII/Celerons @1.65v. ![]() HTH & surf over to Intel for 440BX chipset specs & what they will support. Goto powerleap and check out the funky slot1 tulatin slocket upgrade 'cause I do believe it'll work with your motherboard.
I can personally attest to the flat-out "wow!"-factor power of the 1.4 tulatin celeron, this CPU is incredible! Just thought I'd toss my .02 in. I tried a powerleap adapter before for my old socket4 that didn't work out, but that company bent over backwards trying to help me get it to work and then gave me a full refund when it wouldn't. A definate "good peeps" company.
