12mS TFT
I've been pondering over a 17" TFT for a while now and have just spotted this, although it's at a premium price at the moment (380 Inc VAT) it does seem to be the fastest available (12mS rise+fall). I was looking at an Iiyama at 16mS but this is even faster. Not having much experience with TFT's other than text work can anyone tell me if this would be good for gaming/dvd at this speed? To be honest I would go with the Iiyama. Its Cheaper by quite a lot and the difference between 12ms and 16ms is going to be hardly noticable.
iiyama are renowned for top IQ and after sales service so I think I would make them the first choice. |

Iiyama is a very good brand and should not disappoint, but that 12ms rating is quite intriguing. Supposedly allows for up to 83 fps in games, without ghosting, as opposed to 60 fps for the 16ms rating. Try to find reviews of Acer TFT's, if you think that advantage would be worth the premium. And if at all possible, try to find it in a shop to check it out in person. The Iiyama has the brand and the price in its favor; the Acer has the response time
perhaps Zardon knows more about Acer TFT's

Also remember, even 12ms rise+ fall does not say that much, whether its black to white, grey to white, etc. Also remember the refresh rate is 60hz, so although it does not hurt your eyes like a CRT @ 60hz, i still believe frames are really limited to 60fps in flat panels. DVI technologically is superior due to color separation, but many people do not see noticeable differences among they alternate types. And still, due to the mere tech of response time, there will still be ghosting, though most people get used to it and hardly notice it if ever on sub 20ms panels. If there is a major price difference between the two, I would get the cheaper one. They are both quality monitors.

the Acer page specified "total white to total black and then back again" for the response time;
and concerning the refresh rate "The LCD panels used in them can support a display frequency of 83Hz"

Seeing as many 16ms screens have been shown to only do 16ms at certain color intervals and closer to 25ms on others, it would be great if Acer have managed to reach a true 12ms level. But I wouldn't take a screen manufacturers word for it at this point. Just watch out before dishing out the heavy dough for these monitors. Just a word of caution.

Like vamp found, full white to full black. That is the way most RT are measured, and obviously the fastest. The gray-grey color transitions will be slower than 12ms... The only thing i was speculating about the refresh rate is on some LCDs there is the optimal high refresh rate, but only if you use specific( insert sucky) settings, so I do not know what the case is with this one though.

My question is...who makes the screen? AU Optronics? We should have heard about this screen somewhere! I doubt that Acer would be the ONLY company to have a 12ms panel! I mean, Sony, Hitachi, Samsung, etc etc would definatly want in on this one! Brian
