HDD Failure

So I've got this HDD that doesn't appear to want to work. It's a IBM Deathstar 46 GB. When booting I get a Primary SLave error messsage and windows doesn't see it. Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't mind taking it apart if I can get it to work long enough to get the data off, and if I lose the data no big loss, but it would be nice to have. Maybe some links somewhere for getting the data off or repairing it? Maybe a stuck head or something. I only hear a little like squeek from it upon booting and thats it. Anyone have any info? Thanks!

I'm not sure what your problem is, but DO NOT take apart your drive, because I can almost garentee you it won't work.

Your drive may be toast.

These links may help.

Because of the Class Action suits on the drive line IBM sold their drive technolgy to Hitachi.

I have a little personal experince with the line myself.

When the drives came out the reviews were so good I updated all my computers to use the new IBM series.

Some 40GB drives a few 60GB drives.

With all the systems I have here I bought a couple 60GB drives a few 40GB drives and a couple 30GB drives. Most were the IBM Deskstar 75GXP series.

One of the 60GB drives died on my and I returned it for repair twice.

Within a year all the drives had died expect for one IBM Deskstar 75GXP 61.49GB 7200rpm ATA-100 HDD - DLTA-307060.

The last drive is still working but makes loud a loud sound so I pullled it anyway.

I did not send any in for repair after the first few drives due to the known failure rate.

I even went to the touble of adding the recommend fan assembly early on to prevent the drives from overheating.

Was an expensive experince but if you read the forums above you will see I was not alone.

You can download the fitness test program from Hitachi to verify the drive is bad.

Drive Fitness Test
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm

You can run the above test program to verify if you have a bad drive.

Personally I would ripe it out of my system even if it tested good. The drive is bad to me even if it thinks it is ok.

What causes them to go bad? I'm not terribly worried about ruining the drive if I have a chance even a small one of fixing it long enough to get the data off, b/c as it stands now I can't get the data off it. Does anyone know any guides links info on taking one of these things apart? I'd like to see the guts of a HDD anyways, maybe write a little guide tutorial explaining CHS by showing it.

Run the fitness test I described above.

If the failure is major there is no chance to get the data off this series of drives. I am not even sure if a data service will be able to do anything but you could try if you "really" need the data.

The reason the drive failed, if it is what I think it it then I would say poor design. It was going to fail and IBM knew it.

The big problem I have with this drive line is IBM never told anyone and still deny's the problem.
IBM documented over 6% failure rate for the 60GB drives alone.

You could join the class action suit, might be able to get some money to offset the trouble.
You will need to run the drive fitness test so you can have a record of the failure though.

Personally I really did not do anything, except put the drives in the garbage.

IBM has lost a customer twice.

I need to explain that one.

I was a big OS2 user since IBM OS2 came out. I was even on there beta team, The last beta I tested was Warp 3.0.
I was asked at during that timeframe to come down to Raleigh, NC t o train some of their engineers, which I did. This was not OS2 training.
But one thing I noticed was no one at IBM was using OS2. The reason I was given was the applications they needed to run only worked in Windows.

When I came back home I removed OS2. Well if IBM was not running their own OS why should I?

Here is stuff on the class action suit.

Consumer Class Actions: IBM 75GXP
Thank you for visiting the home page for the class action litigation against IBM in connection with the 75GXP hard disk drives. This site is maintained by counsel to the class, the law firm of Sheller Ludwig & Badey.

This page is designed to inform purchasers of the 75GXP series of hard disk drives and other interested parties about the litigation, and to provide 75GXP consumers with a means to assist counsel in prosecuting the cases on their behalf by telling us about their experiences with the 75GXP in our questionnaire. By filling out the questionnaire you further assist us in this litigation, and ensure that you will be notified of material developments.

Cases are currently pending in California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. These cases are being brought on behalf of purchasers of the 75GXP series hard disk drives, irrespective of the entity from whom it was purchased. Please note that IBM sold this drive directly, and also distributed it to retailers and to other computer manufacturers, such as Dell, HP, Gateway, Compaq and Apple.

The litigation has received considerable national and international attention. We have assembled a collection of articles about the litigation on our IBM Press Page. We will endeavor to keep this page current and report on material developments.

I was lucky, I had a 46gig 75GXP for years, even had two in raid on my old ABit BE6II Rev 2 for a while - unfortunately I fried it when I inadvertantly (read stupidly)plugged the power back into it live.

My mate - who wasn't so lucky with his GXP gave me his drive and after transplanting the control board I got my data back, though I don't run the drive anymore.
