Problem with my CD-RW Drive

I have a problem with my IOMEGA CDRW23042EXT3-C (external 40x12x48 USB)

Okay, it is connected to computer, says it is working fine. However, whenever I put a disk in, the light will show up, i can hear it...but then it seems to suddenly stop (no slow down).

When I open up the Iomega Burning program, I select the data I want, but when I put the disc in, it cannot read it. If I dont take it out, the program crashes and then the system. So I tried music match jukebox, but whenever I try to burn something, it says I need to put the correct kind of disc in.

Now, I was burning earlier today, was making many copies, and on the 20th it just made the "clicking noise" and would not move. Tried to end task, nothing worked, system crashed, and I restarted. Ever since then is when these problems have been happening. Now, it will not burn and usually crashes.

If any of you can help, I would be grateful.

IF you need any more information, just post it here.

Actually sounds like a bad drive - try on another computer to confirm the failure - if the burner gives problems on another computer then at least you know...

Hopefully it is still under warranty...

Still, trying on another computer will tell you definitely if it is the drive or the software on your computer...divide and conquer!

You've already tried two "front end" software applications to burn with and they both failed (with different messages though...) - that's why I suspect the drive. A CDRW drive only has one laser, but it is used with different power levels depending upon whether it is reading or burning. The circiutry for the higher power level or other hardware inside the drive dealing with the burn process is my suspect...

The drive will likely default back to USB 1 - the other computer should still see the drive.

Look for a firmware update... I looked didn't see any ... make sure your runing the latest software http://www.iomega.com/software/hotburn/hotburnpc.html . Also make sure your latest chipset drivers are installed

But if it’s making noises it's likely going to be a mechanical problem and need RMA’ed

Well, I did many hours on Live Chat....who told me it was too complicated for them

So they gave the the number for phone support. Got on there, was talking to them, doing thing after thing. They gave me the Professional software for free to try out, still did not work.

Had me change from added in USB 2.0 to the factory USB 1...still did not work. Tried 1 more reinstall, still did not work. So, this may be because it was 30 mins after the guy was supposed to be home, they said they will send me a brand new one.
