Internet / Bandwidth / Downloading / STUFF!
This week my cable provider increased the download speeds for all users. My download was increased from 3.0 Mbps to 4.5 Mbps. Before while it was at 3.0 Mbps we had no problems downloading while playing games. Now with the increased speed when I download the ping rises in games from say 50 ms to about 120 ms. I direct all traffic through a router to 3 computers so I'm not sure if it's a hardware problem, software problem on my end, or the ISP itself. I'm searching the internet now as well to try to find information but anything you guys might be able to provide would be grateful.

I also set the max download speed to what it was around at 3.0 to be around 350 KB/s. This still caused an increase in ping. My main problem is that I like to download stuff but my brother plays Counter-Strike almost all day on and off and everytime I would download he'd be yelling up.... so....

do you have comcast??? if so, their tech people are pretty good and you could probably do well calling and askign them....if not...ummm...try assigning a specific port to counterstrike maybe?

I can call my tech support, they are farily good. I just figured it might be something I can correct. I'll probably test plugging straight into the modem to see if it's just the router.

After plugging my computer directly into the cable modem, it didn't cause an increase in ping while downloading meaning that it's the router... which hopefully is fixable.

actually.. you could probably relate it to the modem itself.. even if you connected straight to the modem.... it may had a problem with it's new speed increase and the router..... (i'm finding out that some places are actually suggesting getting a new cable modem for those having problems with the update as some just can't handle certain things correctly with multple connections or various other things... they aren't able to handle it all with the more bandwidth offered)

I'll call the tech support for my cable provider then and see what they have to say. They open in a few hours but it's already 3:30 AM for me so I'll have to do it as soon as I get up.

Ok I called my cable company and they just said with the increase in bandwidth it will do that.... so they are useless. Anyway, does anyone else know of something I could do?

Reduce the upload speeds of the P2P programs. That will eat away at your bandwidth.. Guess what, you are in luck, I have a program that will fix many problems..
I was on Broadbandreports.com for a long time under the Adelphia tech support forum talking to high level system engineers and level 2 techs and they couldn't help- I get this program and most of my problems were fixed.. It is called cablenut- load the profile for 4.5 down, and whatever upload speed you have- it will set your windows settings perfect- Rwin, etc..... Here it is, you are welcome in advance... http://www.cablenut.com/ Get the add-on pack, it will have your particular setup- with download and upload speed-- but you need to find out what your upload speed is, that's important.. What is it, 256, 384?? Installer will now detect Operating System, and apply it to the Adjuster. Satellite Internet CCS files added. (Win 9x Adjuster) EnableRouting parameter removed. (Win 9x Adjuster) MaxMSS parameter removed. (Win 9x Adjuster) MaxMTU parameter removed. (Win 9x Adjuster) DefaultTOS parameter added. (Win 9x Adjuster) IGMPLevel parameter added. (Win 9x Adjuster) TcpTimedWaitDelay parameter added. (Win NT/2000 Adjuster) DisableMediaSenseEventLog parameter removed. (Win NT/2000 Adjuster) FFPControlFlags parameter removed. (Win NT/2000 Adjuster) TcpMaxConnectRetransmission parameter removed. (Win NT/2000 Adjuster) DisableUserTOSSetting parameter added. (Win NT/2000 Adjuster) DefaultTOSValue parameter added. (Win NT/2000 Adjuster) FastSendDatagramThreshold parameter added. (Win NT/2000 Adjuster) IgnorePushBitOnReceives parameter added. Updated CCS files. Updated dat files. Misc. CCS file fixes. v1.60 compiled Installer. New look, and 30% faster!

My download is 4500 and my upload is 512. Sorry I wasn't able to catch you sooner I've been gone all night. This will clear up the high ping issues you believe? I don't see a profile for mine that comes with the program so hmm...

I had the same problem but it wasn't caused from going my speed increase (3 to 5Mbps), I always had this problem. I was told my router was too slow to keep up with multiple connections at the same time (usually at least 4 in my house) and that I should get one with a high speed cpu. Well, the one I originally had was a 50 MHz model and the one I replaced it with was at 150MHz(fastest I could fine). That made all the difference in the world for me. Cost me an arm and a leg but it helped a lot. But if you say it worked fine before I don’t know what to say, maybe with the higher speed you also get some higher latencies with your isp.

It's just kind of annoying how it started though. I have no money so I can't go out and buy a better router. I just thought that maybe there was a solution to this.

Before that never happened and when I plug directly into the modem and bypass the router the pings stay constant just like the first image is even while downloading at the max speed.

sounds like your router doesn't duplex correctly.

For the past 4 days I've been trying to find a solution or at least a good answer as to why it doesn't work. I've searched google, posted on like 395835 forums and no one really knows. You'd think that it might be a reasonable question as to why it happens... or maybe no one else really cares since they never really looked. If I was the only computer plugged into the router, do you think it would still mess up?

If you're downloading allot at the same time someone else is playing an on-line game, that person is going to have a higher ping- that's the way I though it was supposed to work, especially if you are uploading and downloading at the same time.. I think people don't try to find answers to that because they expect that to happen.. What P2P program are you using? Can you limit the upload and download a little and test it then?

No, I'm not using any P2P at all, I'm talking about just downloading any file from the internet. If I download say XP SP2 from the MS site it will kill me ping. I know upload kills your ping which is why I don't upload anything when even thinking about playing. Before if I was pinging yahoo and getting 30ms and started downloading a file it'd still be at 30ms. Now it's at 100-120ms.

ping is the time it takes for a signal to get to a destination AND back to the source, so it still has to wait wehn you are downloading files

Lets say you are not uploading anything (accept the small overhead needed to download) and then you are downloading at 75% of maximum bandwidth. You still have a lot of bandwidth left if you have a really fast connection, probably more bandwidth that many people's entire bandwidth- so ping shouldn't really be affected until all the bandwidth is saturated... I still think Cyan007 should apply the highest values cablenut will let him and just test it-- then maybe he will get an idea if the pings get better or worse or stay the same.. Cablenut gave me a 30% boost You can always revert to the values before you changed them.. Maybe do it on both PC's

Well my friend down the street has the same exact router as I do, 3 computers hooked up like I do the only difference is that his max download is 3.0 Mbps. When he downloads the same exact thing I test on, it doesn't make his ping go up. When I don't use my router, it doesn't make my ping go up.

If I purchased another router of a different brand / more powerful, would it work a lot better? Is there a chance the 4.5 Mbps is too much for this router? As for trying his router it's his dad's and it's not budging.

Yeah, supposed to be.... I think I need to make a new section in my favorites just for the forum bookmarks I have from this single topic trying to find some sort of reasonable answer. :P
