I hate to quote myself... LOL...
"After the first DVD drives were released based on the DVD Minus (-) format, it was found that the minus format wasn’t too compatible with set DVD players. Later, a new more compatible format was created: DVD Plus (+).
After this, the DVD industry split: half siding with the DVD Minus format and the other with DVD Plus. Although, both formats have their advantages and disadvantages, no single format was ever chosen as “mainstream”. DVD Plus is the most compatible format, however, it is also the most expensive. Since DVD Plus is highly compatible with set DVD players it is mostly used for DVD Video. DVD Minus is not the most compatible with set DVD players, it is, however, perfectly fine for data storage." |

I beg to diff... the -dvd format is more widly used and supported. I use to work for a electronics store and all but one model could play +dvd. Also, +dvd is MORE $$$$ than -dvd.

that is is dom.... in canada.... we are just backwards.... seeing how were all tucked away down south
.... no seriously, Canada would not ACCEPT IBM's Deskstar hardrives... i tried getting one regardless of what the heck was going on... they wouldn't let the hardrive go passed the bloody boarder as it didn't comply to FCC or something... i'm kinda glad i didn't end up with it....

I use DVD+R.
My DVD is from 1999 and I can see the movies I burn. But DVD-R works as well.

I use the (-) disks becuase that is all my Panasonic home dvd players and PS2 read. Weird becuase they even say it the manual. Best to try them out tho, some things are picky; like the Xbox, which only reads (+) disks

as long as it's an R disc and not an RW...most DVD players should read it just fine.....and as long as you have dual format optical drives, it wont matter in your computer anyways....so either way i spose

Also to note there are 3 factors which determine whether or not a disc will play on a certain player or DVD-ROM.
They are: The drive the disc was burnt on, The disc itself. The drive the disc is to be played on. What I mean is you can have a sony burner and use your favourite media to play on your sony DVD player and all works fine. If you then use the same media on a pioneer burner and try and play it back on your sony DVD player, it may not work yet the disk works in your DVD-ROM or another set top player. So you could go and buy 100 pcs blank media, burn some (home) movies and they wont play on your player, but they will play on your mates. I think what I was trying to say was that compatibility these days is more media (brand/type) dependant than on the hardware. |

DVD+/- are the same price here... in my personal experience - which has been with a plethora of dvd players - minus are better for films on set-top players and + are better for data

i've always heard they had the same compatibility with any dvd device that was fairly new (2000+)...and minus was more compatible with anything going older than that.
