exclamation Question about CD Burners

I just recently bouth a Liteon CD Burner that can burn up to 52x speed.

Now, I put it on that, and it felt like I was in the USS Enterprise, it cleared the dust from my pc because the fan was going so fast.

Anyways, how long do these usually last? I don't want to keep using 52x if it's going to burn out, you know? My last one burnt out.

I don't think you have to worry, LiteOn makes strong and good cd:s/dvd:s, I had my old Lite on 16x10x40 for about 4 years (still have it but not in my current computer).

So don't worry, just burn.

The drive should have come with a one year warranty, so at least that. In actuality, burning at 52x compared to 16x, should put the same amount of wear in the drive. So, don't worry about the speed.

I would avoid recording at full speed unless whenever actually necessary. Choose something like 32x instead of 52x in the recorder software. The difference in time will not be too big either.

For data (computer files) the 52x speed is the way to go (I have one too - the Lite On 52x - wife loves it - and it came with Nero software). Wear on the drive mechanism is not a concern as the drive is designed to move at that speed and from net accounts I've read does not cause premature failure. It is a good idea to update the firmware as Neon Cowboy mentioned. Also keep your burner software updated as it will help match the drive to your chosen brand of blank CDR/CDRW disks.

For audio burning, for greatest fidelity, I have heard lately that choosing a slower burn speed (no more than 8x) is best.

How do I update the firmware?

(Recently updated - nice page!)

The instructions as to how to update are here

Any other questions? Hollar back!

Burn safely...

Why exactly do I have to update firmware?

Thanks, by the way.

updating firmware helps out with supporting different medias better...so they'll burn better and work in more devices. my my lite-on dvd-rw 411s wouldnt burn compusa dvd-rs until i updated the firmware, and it works great now. before, every one got stuck at 1%

I had a 16x10x40 LiteOn for a quite some time and have upgraded to faster ones recently. About a week ago I gave the LiteOn to my mom because her HP 4x burner went kaput. (The tray wouldn't eject any longer.) She's thrilled with this one.

And, as the others have suggested, I also concur that you need to update the firmware if there's an update available. It's sort of like a tune-up for an automobile.
