A Question about Rambus Ram.

Okay, so I bought Star Wars Galaxies, and I was told my lagging problem is from not having enough ram (I have 512).

Now, I have Rambus ram. Someone at the pc store told me I should buy it from Dell, because the other ones might not work with it.

He said that they all have different nano-seconds, or something. And that they have to be timed perfectly in order to work.

Don't know if this is %100 truthful, but someone on the Star Wars forum suggested I buy this

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...151-102&depa=0 One stick of that is close to 300-400 on Dell. They rip you off big time.

What I want to know is, if I buy it, will it be able to run on my Dell? Or is the PC guy correct?

Not sure, but it's newegg, they're the best in terms of doing business with. You'll get it within 3 days of purchase and it's pre apporved to be sent back and refunded.

Not to go off topic, but this game is one of THE best games I've played. And it would take the cake if it ran fine with the 1gb.

Sad thing is, it's taking over my life.

Okay, I just ordered it, 198 for two sticks of 256 Ram.

Let's hope the guy at the pc shop had no freaking clue what he was talking about.

Yeah, Dell overprices their ram really badly, and it's all just Crucial ram IIRC anyway.

you should be fine with returns. i remember one time i ordered a gig of ram from this online retailer...i got it, only to find out it was 1x1gig stick...not 512x2 like i thought. (my mobo only had two slots, and it didnt support 1 gig sticks. thank christ that computer is gone)....anyways, i just emailed them, and they exchanged it for me. didnt even make me pay the difference!

The only thing I'm worried about is if it'll work.

As I said, the guy said it probably won't. Not sure if he's telling me a fib or not. But he said Dell pcs who use Rambus Ram only use DELL ram, they have different nano seconds.

Just a quick question: Does ECC up the latency on RAM a bit?

Well, because some RAM has ECC, Error Checking Code, then does generally that RAM have higher latency because it has to correct errors and whatnot?

Not really..

ECC doesn't effect performance that much, but it's great for servers and such because it ensures reliability. For overclockers and normal users, ECC isn't needed.

This review which Veridian did isn't RDRAM, but it gives you an idea of the differences..

i am assuming you are running pc 800. as long as you buy pc 800 you will have no problems. one of the good things about rdram is complete compatibility. just make sure it is 184 pin.

Yup, it works. All of this just for Star Wars Galaxies, heh.
