"DVDs will be obsolete in 10 years: Bill Gates"

Quote:
Bill Gates shares his vision for a future free of DVDs. He views a television that shows the user what they want to see, when they want to see it. Is Bill Gates right? In only ten years will we be DVD free, and come to rely on another format?

DVDs will be obsolete in 10 years at the latest, Microsoft boss and founder Bill Gates predicted. Asked what home entertainment would like in the future, Gates said that DVD technology would be "obsolete in 10 years at the latest. If you consider that nowadays we have to carry around film and music on little silver discs and stick them in the computer, it's ridiculous," Gates said in comments reproduced in German in the mass-circulation daily Bild.

"These things can scratch or simply get lost." Gates' vision of television of the future was: "TV that will simply show what we want to see, when we want to see it. When we get home, the home computer will know who we are from our voice or our face. It will know what we want to watch, our favourite programmes, or what the kids shouldn't be allowed to see."

Streaming media has improved over the years and will continue to do so.. now if only ISPs can get reliable connections everywhere. We'll be set

I really don't see Streaming media being a big thing. Do you really want to rely on someone else to keep your stuff? Or would you rather have it on you.

True those horrid unreliable things just never learned how to die. If they are still around in ten years it will be really funny. Just think you have 200+ghz computer with a 75TB harddrive, Radeon X9800, Soundblaster Audigy 7 ZS, Some Optical type drive, and a Floppy Drive!

bill is having fantasies. again. dvd still has not overtaken vhs. bill has no understanding of the unwashed masses. i can not begin to imagine how many homes do not/ or are just getting dvd players. or how many people own computer with dvd rom in them & are only using them as cd rom. dvd is really just taking off.
what bill is really talking about is him getting his quarter every time somebody watches a movie or uses a program. a lot of companies want this. just do not see it realisticly happening anytime soon.
thank god!

He's not saying they'll be gone. He said obsolete. Which they will be. floppy disks are obsolete, hell so are CDs. That doesnt mean alot of people dont still use them.

i do not think they will even be obsolete. blue ray is only just getting ready to start making an appearance, as is multi layer. hell games are only just starting to come out on dvd. bty where did you get the impression that cds were obsolete?
you & bill are confusing available tech with what is viable & usable mainstream. if you go by tech that is out there & is developing dvds will be pretty much obsolete within a year.
the problem is getting it 'accepted' & to market - before somebody comes up with something better- then getting johnq to accept it. his statement is true, but it really does not mean anything. bill is a good politician too ya know.
