After moving the drive to the primary master I still get a crazy identification like that, and windows won't install on the drive when I get to the setup a partition part of the xp install I can tell it to make it whatever size I want but it just goes back to 694675Kb or whatever unpartitioned space. Anyone know how to boot from USB?

Sounds like the hard drive is almost dead, do this as a last resort go to http://ultimatebootcd.com/
download it and burn the iso on to a cd, then boot of it and try some of the hard drive diags.

The other rig saw it fine and repaired is using scandisk, hower I'm trying to install now and the thing seems to be crapping out formatting and partitioning, MAndrake says the disk is to corrupt for me to decipher anything I'll have to reformat the whole thing..... We'll see if I can scavange anything

I encountered that quite a few times, I changed the IDE cable and that fixed it right up everytime. It's like one of the pins/wires in the cable went bad.
It's something you should try anyway. Heck of a lot simpler than screwing around with firmwares and cheaper than replacing harddrives. I'd almost be willing to bet that's what the problem is. |

I had an IDE wire go bad on me earlier this year too- changing it solved all the problems I was having with the drive- It's over 3 years old and still kicking now.
