major problem: fans are shutting down
yesterday i got another stick of 512 ddr 400 just for some doom 3 prep
![]() so its running in dual channel. just a bit ago i left the room for some ice cream, comp was turned off but i never turned it off. i tried power it on didnt power on. i got afraid my mobo went, cause my 800 athlon did the same thing and the mobo was fried (maybe a power spike). so fine i reset the bios, computer is back to life but no fans are working. i reset again let everything sit for a few mins and everything comes back. as i reset my cmos values, my CPU temp was at 110 degress, i got so afraid so i blasted my volcano at 5500 rpm to cool it. starts dropping all the way down to its usual 55 degress which is still damn high. i boot into windows all the fans DIE except my radeon and northbridge fan. i turn it off really quickly. i take out my second stick of ram and needed to reset the bios. CPU overheating protection is one of the greatest things invented by the way, saved my processor's life lol so basically the second stick is messing everything up, i'm thinking this is a power related problem because i have a load of stuff and the second stick of ram might be killing it. my comp specs are below (including my PSU which is 350w, just a generic one) or could this be faulty ram both samsung sticks of 512 ddr 400, i really got worried. I was running PAT (or MAT as MSI calls it) at turbo, someone please help me asap haha thanks |

hmmm... 350 watt psu...... strange.. i'm running probably way more power sucking components than you and i'm pushing it all with a faily cheap model of enermax.. (not cheap cheap.).... 350 watts..... i SERIOUSLY need a better psu though.... strange... approx 20 watts drawn with an extra stick of ram... try unplugging some useless stuff or something that draw power... say disconnect a cd-rom drive and pull out your audigy or any other addin's that aren't being used..
BTW... remember... DISABLE anything that you don't use or don't plan on using in your bios.... say for example a Printer port.. or serial ports or even some IDE or SATA ports... anything that'll cut back on resources or anything....

ok it sounds like it could be a power supply issue - try swapping the sticks around to see if it is faulty ram - but that shouldn't affect fan speed - my guess is you have been hoverign close to the limits of your psu, and the second mem chip tipped it over

usually for a good quality PSU such as enermax or Antech.... if he had overloaded the PSU... the entire machine would shutdown... not just the fans.... makes me wonder.... BBP... you running a damn good over/under surger protector? not just any cheap one either.... it might be of value to pick up a damn cheap APC UPS power bar..... the cheapest ones go for 30-40 bucks canadian and give anywere from 5 to 15 minutes of backup time..

you'd be serprised that even a house that looks stable.... may have the worse spikes ever..... nothing worse for a computer then a brown out..... i've learnt the hard way! BTW.. according to both Caculators. i'm 100 watt over my PSU's limit.....

according to that second one i am breaking the limit of my PSU but 57w - maybe that explains why my system has trouble cold booting
