HDD powering down on reboot
Help me guys please
I just rebuilt my OS this morning and I've noticed that when the machine reboots, it is powering off my raptors. They are running in RAID0 on the northbridge controller and didn't do this before. Both drives share the same molex connector through the SATA splitter that came with the Abit motherboard. Its an IC7-MAX3 btw. They clunk 'off' just before the screen goes black and back to BIOS and then spin up again when the boot sequence gets to the raid controller screen (the one that tells you the drive config etc) The machine has no problems at all from what I can tell, it only does this when I tell it to restart. I'm worried that something bad may happen to the array or one of the drives themselves if this continues. |

Could be a IRQ problem, check what IRQ is givin to the drives in windows..
In bios check if PNP aware OS is enabled, & try to release as much IRQ as you can by disabling devices you dont need: like parralel & serial port's also; reset the PNP bios |

hmmm, dont think its a bios issue as nothing has changed - and all the unused devices are turned off. Cant see any irq conflicts but I will see if I can change them anyway.
Thanks mate. |

Best setting in the bios is to have PNP OS to NO.... (specially on Creative soundcards)..... this might be a power related issue.. does a cold boot take awhile to start? warm booting could be just fluke of some sort... strange though.. would be a bitch to install windows

Try resetting the CMOS... If it is the problem it's no big deal, you just need to set the BIOS options again.

its definately not a power problem or it would have shown up before now.
This only occured after I re-installed windows. Its also not a boot up problem, be it warm or cold. The drives power off just before windows exits. The second before the screen goes from blue to black. I reset the CMOS and it made no difference. What I have noticed is that the drives spin up separately which would indicate that something is happening in the northbridge to shut them off in the first place. Its weird and its a little worrying but I'm sure I can live with it if its not going to hurt anything. |

I just thought I'd give you all an update.
Since this started happening, I have been experiencing random reboots galore (even when the machine is idle) and noticed that since SP2 was installed, I couldn't run nero 6. Even with the latest version. I found on Sunday that the machine always reboots if I have nero open and try to open Firefox. I thought this was a bug with Firefox and for 5 mins I just thought to myself that I was going to have to live with this until I can afford new hardware. After the 5 minutes passed, I decided to rebuild for the umpteenth time. Got the chipset drivers installed and rebooted - the drives didn't power down. HAHA Sucess! I continued installing all the software that was included on the ABIT CD. and found that after the Intel App Accelerator was installed the problems started again. So I downloaded the latest version 4.5 and installed that (the previous version was 3.0.6 or something). I've just been sorting through my driver CDs and found 2 copies of the ABIT cd. Both were different versions (one was from the mobo that I killed during water cooling it) and I'd been using the old version by mistake. I had tried new versions of all sorts of drivers from the chipset to the sound card and never even gave the IAA a second thought. Silly Me |

Yeah chipset drivers get outdated fast, every once in a while. I just go on the net and download them, or put them on a CD-RW if I have no access
Good deal

I usually do - the only thing I never really give any thought to updating is the IAA.
Drivers and everything else are updated regularly. Silly, Silly Me. |
