Nothing like trying to help someone...

I have worked on various computers locally as well as in a corporation - and to be truthful I haven't had any issues with anyone that has made a call to me to help them out with their computer. Now recently someone informed me of their popup issues, and I thought I would guide them to Ad-aware by Lavasoft and Spybot's Search and Destroy. The thing is their problem seemed to be so bad that they couldn't go to the homepages of Lavasoftusa.com to download ad-aware or Spybot's homepage so I personally emailed them the software. Well after running the programs as I instructed (which discovered supposedly over 400 items) they then complained about the issue becoming worse, so they installed Stopzilla which seemed to stop the issues of popups. So after being berrated for hurting their computer - which I never would do I recieved an email from them today informing me that their brother removed Spybot and Ad-aware because according to him "they contain spy ware which allows people to gain access to bank accounts in websites. "

What I would like to know really... is where on god's green earth would someone get that kind of information?

You counter them.

You explain to them that the programs you sent them aren't spyware, you try to educate. I would find links proving that Adaware and other utilities of that sort are not malicious. Try to obtain as much sources to back up your claim. If they don't listen, then just appologize and walk away There are a lot of dense people in the world, and you can only have so much patience for them.

Well said. Help them to the truth, and give them what they need to believe it - but it's always their choice, and those giving the advice (us) need to respect that.

Well I believe I have sent out my last email to them on this matter - I simply restated my position; that of being disappointed in how things turned out, and my personal belief on the reliablity of Ad-aware and Spybot Search & Destroy - though happy that they no longer have issues with popups since they are using Stopzilla. As well as my feelings and knowledge will not change their belief in the the knowledge of a family member - nor should it. I did recommend that they do at least a basic search on the products, reviews/opinions. Simply because the way it seemed if I supplied any link of a reliable service myself it would be questionable, but in the end I simply stated that I hoped that their computer would not have anymore issues in the future. As well as my apologies for any ill feelings that this situation may have caused between the two of us.

Thank you everyone for your attention btw to this post - which I think was more vent of frustration than anything - I found your responses reassuring and insightful really on how this situation should be handled in the future - but I certainly wish that this type of issue will not arise again, so stressful and upsetting really the way things can turn out when you try to be helpful.

Patience? What's that?

Nah, seriously when people are as ignorant/dense as this there really is only one thing to do; Walk .

No matter what you say or try to impress upon them these sound like the sort of people who are gonna argue that the sky is green.

I deal with people all day long fixing their e-mail issues and about 10% of the time I get the ones who are mad at you because they don't agree with the way you fixed their issue. It is a thankless world out there and just keep trudging through. The ones that thank you with a big smile on their face and tell their co-workers/ friends about the great job you did are the ones that make up for the people who do nothing but criticise those of us who did truly help them out. Keep your chin up Toten, I am sure you do a fine job!!

I hear ya there bud.

Me: ok I replaced your hard drive - would you kindly log on and make sure everything is working"

Customer: Wheres all my Excel and Powerpoint files?

Me: On the server where you should have been saving them.

Customer: I didn't save on the server.

Me: Well they are on this drive (shows customer the dead HDD in my hand) which is about to go in the bin.

Customer: But I need those files for a presentation I'm doing tomorrow and all my expenses are on there!!!!

Me: You are supposed to save your files on the server in case this happens.

Customer: Wait there, I'm calling your boss. You're not leaving here until I get those files back!!

Me: He'll tell you the same thing I told you.

Customer: Hello, I have one of your engineers here working on call number xxxx-xx-xxxxx-x and he says that my old data is unreoverable.

My Boss: Yes, thats correct. Did you not save your data on the server?

Customer: No, I dont always have time to wait for that - the network is so slow here.

My Boss: You actually have a 10Mbps full duplex connection to the server - saving files takes seconds and its actually quicker than saving to floppy disks. Do you have the files on floppy? We will be quite happy to re-install them if you do.

Customer: Erm, no. My coleague says that we shouldn't use floppy disks as they get virus and my credit card details may get stolen.

My Boss: Have you ever used your CC details on a company pc?

Customer: No.

My Boss: Then you have nothing to worry about. Please sign the job sheet to say the work has been completed as my engineer has other calls to attend. You did not save your data to the server which is company policy. Please make sure you do in future and you will not end up in this predicament again.

Customer: Ok.

This actually happened about 4 months ago. I revisted the same person again last week to replace another hard disk (my my, she is rough with her laptops isn't she).
Guess what she asked when the drive was replaced? Wheres my data?

I replied that its on the server where she should have saved it. She hadn't. Data lost again.

Some people never, ever, ever, ever learn and find it even harder to listen to the people who work in this industry (because we probably dont know what we are talking about )

Chin up mate - you did all you could. If people dont want to accept that the folks in the know are correct, they deserve to have a spyware infested system. Harsh words I know - but this sort of thing really hacks me off!
