erm.... i've tried.... there is ZERO support for this form of connection... you'd need to grab i think windows 98 to even attempt.... (you also need to make a cross over phone cable i do beleive as well when i was last reading up on ways to connect which was AGES ago)... in the end... i found it just cheaper to go out and get a NIC and whatever

here is what I did. I had one computer have the modem dial up and from there I put a crossover ethernet(not a normal ethernet) cable from the NIC to the router. Then I told that computer to set up a network where I am directly connected to the internet and all other computers connect to the internet from me. They cant access your files at all since you're the server(and using a crossovercable) but on the minus end, you cant access their files either. Everything gets dialup shared though so everyone gets internet. In fact you can set it up so that when one computer tries to use the internet and your computer isnt online, it'll dial you up automatically.
anyway thats just my thing...its what I did and it worked really well. Still be warned: Sharing dialup between more than 2 computers=hell edit: Oh yeah I'm using WinXP PRO

if you have an audigy you can connect the modem to one and bridge that connection with the fire wire port on the audigy...it has a few hitches and the IP sometimes gets confusing...but it can be done
