Skyrocketing CPU temps

Hey yall, ive got a major problem here.

Iam running an athlon xp 2200+ w/stock cooling. I normally get 38-41C temps under heavy load, but just today, it has skyrocketed to a 54C temperature. I shut down my pc right away to let that baby cool down. The only recent think i could think of his that i installed some ne w memory. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you may have disturbed the heatsink while you where putting that new stick of ram in.

Take off the HSF and clean the old tim off the HSF and processor with cellulose thinners, goof off, meths, rubbing alcohol, acetone or whathave you.

Apply some new tim (recommend AS5 or AS ceramique) and reseat the HSF.

Hope this helps. Good luck.
