buying ram...does it need to come in sets?
i was thinking of buying new ram when i get this bass amp sold...and i noticed the geil pc3200 on sale at newegg...and it got me thinking. it's one 512 stick, so it's not a dual channel pack..but if i get two of these, they should work in dual channel right?
i dont want to end up paying more for a dual channel pack when i dont really have to. |

i have 1024mb... one 512mb pc3200 by osz and one 512mb pc3200 by corsair and dual channel is enabled on my mobo bios....so it would look as though it would work.

Yes of course it would run in dual channel..
I've ran different brands of ram in dc....it's only a salestrick imo that you would need two identical sticks...

yeah, most any two sticks will work.
I think BWX once even had two sticks of different brands, sizes, and speeds working fine in dual-channel.

ok, i was pretty sure it would work (as that's how i have it now...but with this AMAZINGLY FAST micron pc2100!!!!) i just wanted to be safe.
Anyways, so what would you guys recommend? i want to keep it around the 160 mark...as school starts and i wont have a job anymore..and i have to have some fun! also, what would happen if i put the two new pc3200 sticks in the primary slots, then added the memory i have right now into the remaining two? would it use all the memory at the slower (ddr266) speed? or would it differentiate? also, would dual channel work still? |

it would be dual-channel, but at DDR266.

ok, so i should just get rid of the old ram, because it will slow down my computer eh?
i have the intel thoroughbred 2.4 533..but i have it OCd...im not sure on the precise speed (i used the asus ai to OC everything 10%), but cpu-z gives the following info in regard to bus speeds: Front Side Bus Frequency 220.0 MHz Bus Speed 879.9 MHz |

I think you meant Northwood, not thoroughbred
![]() yeah, I would go with pure pc3200 in that computer
