the problems don't stop..please help - sound

Yea so i just reinstalled Windows XP after my system got screwed up, installed all the drivers and everything, then i installed my sound card. Not physically, i just used the CD that came with my computer...its a SB Audigy 2. Right after i installed it, i'm pretty sure the computer restarted. sound worked perfect, so i start playing a game.

I just DLed the Sygate personal firewall 5.5, and it pops up asking me if i want to let stuff connect every once in awhile...so it did while i was in the game, and i had to exit out of it. I get back in, and all of a sudden some message comes up saying "No disk, please insert a disk in drive E:\". I close it and it comes strait back, like it never goes away, no matter how many times i hit cancel just keeps poppin back up in a half-a-millisecond. So i leave it there and scan for viruses and spyware with Norton and Adaware, nothing shows up. So, i restart...problem solved, except now i have no sound, at all.

No little startup jingle or anything. Like i said i installed all the drivers from the original disk, and after it restarted the first time (when it worked after startup) it said "completing installation of your audio card", so i know it was installed. What i don't get is how it can work for a little while then just quit like that.

I did the sound troubleshooter, followed all the steps, it gave like 10 possible causes and too me through all of them, nothin worked. Volume's turned up, it recognizes the card, its the default, drivers are good, "use this device" is selected, everything..

__________________________________________________ ___________

So basically my question is, what could have happened between the time that stupid message popped up and wouldn't go away and the time the computer started back up that could have screwed up my sound card??
__________________________________________________ ______________

i've looked around on google and no one i found has this exact problem, they always had some kind of error message or clue, it seems like my sound just stopped for no reason at all. Could this be something in the BIOS? i did adjust them once, i think before the sound went out, but im not sure if it was before or after i installed the card...or what i adjusted. I Think i just put HDD in front of CD-ROM in the startup sequence, but i could have accidentally changed something else while i was looking around.

I've got a Dell 4600, ATI 9800 pro 128, 2.6ghz, 512 dual RAM, i dont know what this has to do with anything but if it could help...my BIOS are version A07 Phoenix something or other....computer is pretty much new. Got it january 2004.

is the firewall program asking for a disk? if so it might have a bad download or maybe a bad install.

System Specs

try uninstalling and re-installing the sound drivers
. . . and the firewall
. . . uninstall both, remove the sound card, use the computer for a couple sessions, then install again?

No, i don't think i did...that could be the problem. Somethin weird did happen though, i don't remember when exactly, but i did somethin then Norton just shut itself off, i think i adjusted the startmenu options, the same time that stupid message popped up. but that shouldn't have done anything till after the restart. Norton was screwd up untill i re-enabled a couple startup items. after restarting a few times. Now they're all on.

I'll try re-installing the firewall and soundcard...but i don't want to take the card out of my computer. What's the best sure-fire way to completely uninstall the sound card? I dont wanna end up installing stuff over itself again, i dont need any more problems.

Well on the bottom right hand corner of you computer there is that yellow box w/ a white border i believe as id ont have norton on this system yet. Itll be your norton (right click it and choose Disable). That should do it, install and activate it again, scan if you would want to make sure no harm done. I always scan files I D/L to be sure, disable install enable then scan. Best of luck

hmmm a little red X... weird, when mine is muted it gives a Circle with a /. like a no smoking sign. In your Bios do you have integrated or onboard sound disabled so pci sound will work? I hope this suggestion helps

Im thoroughly confused now. The restart definitely was the clencher, and now my sound doesn't work again. This time, i left the audigy 2 CD in the drive when i restarted, i got a message once i logged in saying "completing installation of your audio card" the windows startup tone came on, had some weird skip towards the end, then i heard my speakers make a noise like they were being turned on or off or something, that little "puff" you hear. Now no sound. Did a diagnostics check, everything passed, the little red X is gone now...i dont get it

HAH! I GOT IT, i figured somethin out on my own!! I guess when it finishes installing it it checks the little "digital output only box" on the speaker settings. I unchecked it and i got sound now...whew, i was about to flip out there for a sec...
