scanner and winXP problem

working on this computer (not mine), trying to get a scanner hooked up and working. i plugged it in, windows recognized a new usb device being plugged in. i ran the twain, module, and driver installations...everything registers fine in programs like word and photoshop...only it says the scanner is not plugged in.

the thing about this scanner is this, it has no external power source...so i assume that it attempts to get it all through the usb line. (it's a mustek 1200 UB Plus)...but, this computer is a dell, and im not sure if the line is powered or not. when i turn the computer on, the scanner doesnt calibrate or move like most do on power-up.

can you guys think of any other possible explanation?

A scanner cannot typically be powered through the USB cable. There is only enough power in a USB port to drive mice and other small appliances.

well...this one can apparently lol...as it has no power jack/outlet, and it worked on a different computer running win98..so im almost positive now that it is the power..although i have no way of opening up the case and checking on whether or not that usb jack is powered...

remove the drivers and all that been installed for the scanner, disconnect the scanner..
reboot the PC and reinstall the driver first. then connect the scanner later.

Had a look around. Perhaps this driver page helps:
http://www.mustek.com.tw/Download/dr...200ubplus.html

If not then perhaps the USB ports on the Dell aren't up to the task. In that case a separate USB card might fare better with this unusual power setup. It not doing anything when started up might indicate that, or at worst that the unit has gone bad.

Found on the German Mustek site that this model is indeed made to draw power only from the USB port even though it's an A4 flatbed scanner. There's a first for everything. (gets reminded of my own Mustek scanner that never got Win2k drivers, grr...)

lol, trust me, it's been done. alot!

hmm, i think i may just tell him to get one of those powered usb hubs. that should do the trick eh?

EDIT: he said it never made startup noise, because i thought the same thing...kind of odd eh? of course, he may just not remember...

sorry i did not know that, i replied from your info... many of the USB device, require its driver to be install 1st. before connecting it to the system. this means you have to install the software BEFORE you ever connect a USB cable. then after the software is installed, connect the device and the correct drivers will be
installed.

Might help, but is probably also a bit more expensive than a USB card. Some Dell systems are pretty crowded from start though.
