active PSUs measure temperatures and adjust fan speed accordingly, so therefore if temperatures inside your case rise, the PSU will increase fan speed to compensate, then once temps are back down to normal, fans will lower.

Whats your budget for the PSU?

If there is also mentioning of something called Active PFC on a part then that is an advantage over the more usual Passive PFC design. Active PFC makes a powersupply more efficient, so that it in can cope with higher loads than an equally rated powersupply with Passive PFC as well as generating a little less heat. It's not a hugely important feature, but if you have some cash to spend then it's something to look for.

my recommendation has to be one of the OCZ powerstream PSUs.

I reviewed the 420w version a while ago http://www.hardwareheaven.com/reviews/OCZ420/ over here. they also do 470w and 520w versions. Im not sure of the USA up to date prices but they should be easy to find on your local online retailers. The 420 and 470 should well fall into your $250 zone.

Whoa, $250 USD is a lot for a power supply, even the 520W OCZ should only be around $130.

yea....those OCZ powerstreams are the bees knees from what i hear and don't seem to ever dissappoint. If you want a cheaper one the Vantec Stealth PSUs are also quite nice (not as consistant on at the rails as the OCZ i don't think though, so if heavy OCing is in your plans go OCZ) and run about $75 for the 420 Watt, or $100 for the 520 watt

Try if possible to go with the suggestions here, your budget is awesome so any quality supply mentioned comes in way under that... You won't be disappointed unless it's DOA or goes within the first 30 or so days - but that happens to the best too...
