router causing connection lag
Okay, as you may know I recently got my DSL connection upgraded from 768/256 to 3000/768. Ever since I got the upgrade I've been noticing, what I can only describe as lag when browsing and downloading. It's most evident with with downloads because the download appears to pause for a secong or two, then continue for a second or two, then pause, in an endless cycle. Not knowing what the problem could be, I decided to disconnect my router and connect directly to the net. After I did this, all my problems went away.
I have a SMC7004VBR Cable/DSL router with its latest firmware. I've tried resetting it, reconfiguring my connection, as well as reinstalling my NIC drivers, all to no avail. As I said, everything works fine without it connected. Anyone ever hear of anything like this before or know how to fix it? |

yes... it's very very possible that your router could be causeing it...depending on the quality and how old it is... . it will give you a big more ping and lower your download rate .... even limit in some cases..... some routers don't like some cable modems and DSL modem as they all react differently to each other....
You could try a DI-604 (good decent router and really cheap) or you could go a little more present with more future proofing (little).... DI-804 However, if anyone is planning on get one hell of a fine ONLY WIRED router, XiCOM make some pretty impressive dual WAN routers which are fully loaded and very fast.... (don't need to run dual... but it's a nice option )anything around or over 150 canadian... for a router.. should provide overall excellent features and speed

The only thing that changed was the connection speed, the modem and router are the same as before. The router is only a few months old.

Mmm, I've been reading these Routers have trouble with highspeed connections due to their SPI(Statefull Packet Inspection), up to 1.5mb all is well but with speeds above 1.5 the router starts lagging..
tried without SPI ? |

Nope, none of that worked, it wouldn't let update the firmware.
I feel like throwing this thing out the window.

In case the network connection to the router is set to full duplex mode, try half duplex. (setting in device manager or network properties for the NIC) Worth a try, even if it's likely that it is the router or the internet connection itself that causes this issue.

Have you tried bypassing the router to test the connection? I have read from quite a few peeps that the faster their connect got the higher their ping/lag got(to a certain point and not for everyone either).

My connection works perfect without the router hooked up.
So I know it's the router.

i wonder....if your router has a DMZ option, try enablign that for your PC, as i have ehard of some older hardware firewalls rejecting connectiosn over a ceertain speeds
if that doesn't work, i'll have somethign else for ya in a few...i'm looking up stats for yer router ![]() UPDATE: can't find anything in the spec sheets of value, sorry....do try the DMZ though Last edited by pr0digal jenius; Sep 17, 2004 at 03:10 PM. |

When your connecting your Modem to your PC and your connection is fine, are you using a different cat5 or the same one that you use with the router?
EDIT: Another Idea. Make sure your network is running at 100mbps and not 10mbps. Make sure it's also Full Duplex. Make sure your NIC in your PC supports 100mbps, and not just 10.

Yup, I tried different wires as well as changing the duplex values.
