Amd 2500+ 2600+?

i was really wondering about this for awhile.. why does everybody buy the amd athlon xp 2500+ and overclock it to the 3200+ instead of buying the 2600+ to do the job when the cost difference between the 2500 and the 2600 is practically zero.. in fact the other day i saw up on newegg the price of the 2600 was cheaper by 3 dollars..

what exactly is the difference between the 2500+ and the 2600+ besides the clock speeds?

System Specs

Model 2500+ is typically a Barton core, wich has a larger L2 cache of 512KB instead of 256KB. Some model 2600+ CPU's also use the lower 133MHz FSB rather than 166MHz wich all Bartons use. A Barton 2500+ is usually easy to get to the level of a 3200+ by simply raising the FSB to 200MHz. All that is needed is fast enough RAM (PC3200 or better) and sometimes a slightly higher core voltage, wich almost any new motherboard can handle. That's why the Barton 2500+ hold such great value.

Edit: Aw chucks.., I see now that there are also Bartons to get with the 2600+ model number, in wich case there is no difference. Such bartons are however a bit more expensive than the 2500+ model here in sweden anyhow.

the 2600 have always been both barton and thoroughbred cores.

But yea....mkk was right about that. a large part of the reason why most people get the 2500 over the 2600 is because if they get a 2500 it's 100% that it's a barton. But if you do get a 2600 barton, you can do the exact same thing by raising the FSB to 200 and you get 2.3Ghz out of it instead of 2.2Ghz. Reason is because the 2600 bartons have an 11.5 multiplier vs. the 2500 bartons have an 11 multiplier. I'd get a 2600 over a 2500. that extra .5 on the multiplier would can do big changes.
