Wierd processor noise

When the CPU is in idle, it makes a wierd unexplainable noise. Kind of the noise of an unbalanced fan. The thing is, that when it's in work, like using Toast or the ATI-tool spinning cube, the sound dissapears.

WTF, could this be?? Is my processor on the last run? Or is it another excuse to get myself a Socket 939 processor???

Does the fan speed up and slow down with heat or load? If so it might be the fan dying.

have you checked there is nothing close to the fan like a loose cable, and seated properly.

"Kind of the noise of an unbalanced fan" it could be the fan on the way out.

as for thew cpu making the noise this is the first i have either heard or seen anything like this, new to me.

Your're right, it is the fan. Men I pressed the fan a bit, the sound go even worse while pressing. But that doesn't solve the mistery that the fan noise stops when stressing the CPU. And gets back after a while.

Yeah, that’s why I was wondering if the fan was thermally controlled. Because if it is slightly off balance it would not be as bad when it picked up on speed but it would get worse at lower rpms. Just a thought though

It might be coming from that on some systems the +12V rail rises slightly when the CPU is stressed, making fans with 12V connection rotate slightly faster. Powersupply and motherboard design can affect this kind of behavior. The fan is probably going bad anyhow since it makes that kind of noise in the slightly lower speed.
