ethernet troubles
Last friday there was a storm here and the power went out for a little while. My computer wasn't on at the time but when I started it up the next day my on-board ethernet wasn't working. (I'm using a surge protector though) I tried uninstalling it and re-installing, but I still get the same error: this device cannot start (code 10). I put in my old pci ethernet card, but it gave me the same error when I installed it, and it was working the last time I used it. Do you think my mobo is damaged or do you think it's windows' fault? I'm running windows xp and my mb is a Syntax K7SV400. Thanks for any help you can give me.

the card could be fried. surge protectors wont help against lightning, and it couldve gone through the network cable...it's happened here before
try sticking it in another computer or puting in a new card.

I like computers.

The fix might be a Windows repair installation... I had to do it on Windows 2000 to get an ethernet card working before, and it sounds like the exact same problem you have.

Well, the card wasn't in my computer at the time, only the on-board LAN. I'll try using it in another computer though.
And I forgot to mention, I already tried a repair installation. Do you think a reformat would work any better? |

if the repair didnt fix it...it sounds like it might be too old/incompatible or just botched. you can try a format, but it doesnt sound like it would help since you already repaired...and it seems like a big hassle if it doesnt work.

that sounds like hardware problem, but code10 error is a neutral error code, hardware and software, treat them equally, reformat might help.

doh!
I found the problem, it wasn't in the slot all the way
I guess my on-board LAN really is broke, but now i'm getting a code 10 for my PS/2 mouse. It doesn't really matter though, cause i'm using a USB one.Thank you all for your help anyway. |

Sometimes the easiest fixes are the first that are overlooked
