go to the below registry key, in the right pane create a new string value name "NeverShowExt" and leave its value data blank.
close the windows registry editor and reboot or logoff/logon.

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile]
"NeverShowExt"=""

or crete a .reg file from this below registry information and import it into your registry.
be well aware to backup your registry first.
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile]
@="Shortcut"
"NeverShowExt"=""

and this is FYI..
Quote:
Unhiding File Extensions

Many malicious (malware) programs such as viruses and worms have begun to appear that exploite the default behaviour of Windows operating systems in hiding file extensions from the user. This behaviour can be used to trick users into executing malicious software by making a file appear to be something it is not. This option is unfortunately enabled by default, but you can disable this option in order to have file extensions displayed by Windows. Many worms transmitted via emails are known to exploit hidden file extensions.

Basically, any users might think the file sent via emails, as attachments are safe as they appear. An example of a worm exploited the hidden file extension was the VBS/LoveLetter worm, discovered in May 2000 which contained an e-mail attachment named

"LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs". Other malicious programs have since used similar naming schemes. Examples include
VBS/OnTheFly (AnnaKournikova.jpg.vbs) - discovered in February 2001
VBS/Timofonica (TIMOFONICA.TXT.vbs) - discovered in June 2000
VBS/CoolNote (COOL_NOTEPAD_DEMO.TXT.vbs) - discovered in May 2000

As safe normal .txt, .mpg, .avi files, when actually the file has malicious script or is executable, i.e. .vbs, .exe

Windows operating systems contain an option to "Hide file extensions for known file types". The option is enabled by default, but you can disable this option in order to have file extensions displayed by Windows.

Just open My Computer | Tools | Folder Options and the following box pop-ups:

The "Hide file extensions for known file types" should be ticked OFF. This is the best security setting.

If yours is ticked ON then tick OFF to protect yourself against this exploit.

Also it is worth ticking the radio button that says, "Show hidden files and folders". Viruses/Worms and Trojans can create hidden folders on your system. Microsoft set this to OFF to protect users from themselves i.e. to stop them accidentally deleting critical system files but by creating this also created a hiding place for hackers and malware.

After disabling this option, there are still some file extensions that, by default, will continue to remain hidden.

There is a registry value which, if set, will cause Windows to hide certain file extensions regardless of user configuration choices elsewhere in the operating system. The "NeverShowExt" registry value is used to hide the extensions for basic Windows file types. For example, the ".LNK" extension associated with Windows shortcuts remains hidden even after a user has turned off the option to hide extensions. If you know what you are doing then it may be worth doing this manually but otherwise just beware of .LNK extensions.

Other extensions affected by this Microsoft "feature" include .shs and .pif files. So beware of these too. The file that says myfile.pif could really be myfile.pif.exe
---------------------------------

these are the registry informations that you can use for creating a .reg file to import into your win 2k/XP registry.
note-- when manually edit your registry you must use the method and information as i mentioned above.

Show Super Hidden File Extensions.reg
this reg file will remove the "NeverShowExt" registry values from your registry.
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DocShortcut]
"NeverShowExt"=-

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut]
"NeverShowExt"=-

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile]
"NeverShowExt"=-

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile]
"NeverShowExt"=-

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SHCmdFile]
"NeverShowExt"=-

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShellScrap]
"NeverShowExt"=-

---------------------------------

UNDO->Show Super Hidden File Extensions.reg
all the extension will be hid, this is the windows default setting.
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DocShortcut]
@="Shortcut into a document"
"NeverShowExt"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\InternetShortcut]
@="Internet Shortcut"
"NeverShowExt"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile]
@="Shortcut"
"NeverShowExt"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\piffile]
@="Shortcut to MS-DOS Program"
"NeverShowExt"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SHCmdFile]
@="Windows Explorer Command"
"NeverShowExt"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\ShellScrap]
@="Scrap object"
"NeverShowExt"=""
---------------------------------

System Specs

simply copy the text that is in the "Code:" box, and paste into Notepad.
save the file as a *.reg file (replace * with a desired file name)
then close and double-click the file, and it will ask you if you want to add the information to the registry.
say OK and that's all.

my friend I think you misunderstand, I really did learn something....
little bits here and there that I gather from reading threads are useful, and I try them out, that is what makes DH a great place. I meant no harm, if you personalize something, be absolutely sure it really is an insult. I am open minded, and that keeps me on an even keel when I am navigating through the forums, if you were insulted I apologize, but you will rarely find me taking shots at anyone in DH unless it is in jest.
