REsponse time on LCD monitors...

Is it the lower the number the better, or the higher. And what the hell does response time have to do with anything. What does it do exactly?

afaik its the equiv to a refresh rate in relation to CRTs, but a lower response is better

Response time is basically the amount of time it takes for a liquid crystal cell to go from active (black) to inactive (white) and back to active (black) again. It is measured in milliseconds or (ms). Lower numbers mean faster transitions (eg. 16 ms is faster than 25 ms.) and therefore less visible image artifacts.
The response time given by retailers is the rise and fall of the crystal-16ms is 8ms rise/8ms fall and 25ms is 15ms rise/10ms fall.
Fps-wise I know it goes like this; 16ms with 60Hz refresh displays a max of 60fps and 25ms with 60Hz does a max of 40fps. The lower is always better as long as other things are not sacrificed to get there. Response time is one of the things one should look for in an LCD. Hope this helps
