Backing up Data to DVD lite-on SOHW-1633s
hello all of dh,
just got a dvd burner for backing up all my downloaded game content to dvd.i have arround 80gigs worth.most of the maps and mods are in winzip format, some are in winrar format.my first attempt was 4.3 gigs of ut2003 maps.all went well i thought, but when i checked some of the zip archives burned to dvd they would not open saying they were corrupt or not valid.they are working on the original cdr that they are coming from though.all drives have the latest firmware and amy chipset drivers are also up to date.the media is memorex 8x dvd+r.i have burned a bunch of movies on this same media and it works great.i would appreciate any help, thx |

Do upou have anything which will report the media id?
http://www.kprobe2.com/ - try a Kprobe scan - to be compatible with the way cdfreaks forum http://club.cdfreaks.com/ do them, use 4x speed. It should show the drive firmware, the media id, and how bad it is (specifications require less than 280 PI and no more than 4 PIF errors peak (in practice, some increase is possible). The Liteon is a bit media-fussy - and Memorex could be just about anything. The Liteon is normally better with +R than -R though - but the best media for it seems to be Anything from Taiyo Yuden (great success in overspeeding older TY with hacked firmware), and perhaps Ricohjpn (actually made by Ritek, but better than Ritek R03) |

Did you copy the files to your HDD first?
If your trying to burn them to DVD straight from CDR that may be a problem - especially if the two optical drives are on the same IDE cable. Oh, that reminds me - you may even have a dodgy cable |

thx matth,it seems that this might have been an isolated incident,i updated the firmware again, thats five releases in one month, and i have not had anymore unreadable zip files or rar files that i know of.i am checking every fifth file for readability.all of the 8x media is just coming out so maybe the firmware updates will take care of most the probs.thx for the links to kprobe but when i tried downloading it was invalid,i will look arround later for a different mirror.thx again

np.
You might find that with another firmware though, you might hit problems again. To be honest, this shouldn't be too much of a problem with modern drives because of the way they work with large buffers etc, but having data flowing the way it is on one IDE cable isn't ideal. My mates machine was always crashing whenever he tried to backup CDs, and we couldn't figure out why it was doing it. In the end I brought him a new cable to replace the existing one and when I opened the case, I discovered two drives one, cable. We put the burner on its own channel and all was well again. Only problem with that was I had to put the cd-rom onto the same channel as the hard disk. I never dared explain to him that this would now slow down his brand new ATA133 HDD to the same transfer speed as his old cd-rom drive. |
