Windows hangs upon inserting CD..
Hey,
I have no idea what I possibly could have done to cause this, but now whenever I put a disc into my LG 52x CD-ROM drive, Windows hangs until I take the CD out. The drive barely sounds like it's spinning the disc. This seems to have occured after reinstalling my nForce drivers in hopes of solving the problems described here. I can not find any drivers for it (the model number is GCR-8523B) and the Firmware updater supplied by the LGE website gives me some error like "Mismatch protocol between F/W and drive!" If I remove the drive from my hardware list, it re-detects it and reinstalls the same bad drivers (if that's what it is) and I couldn't help but notice some unsigned thing in Driver Details called pfc.sys made by a company called Padus Inc. Now I don't recall installing anything from Padus Inc. so I ran a virus scan, spyware scan, registry mechanic, etc.. Nothing. I'll try removing and reinstalling my motherboard drivers again and post results, cuz that seemed to be around when this started.. |

I haven't reinstalled the nForce drivers yet, but what I did try was switching the cable from my CD-ROM to my CD-RW, disabling the CD-ROM drive and setting the drive letter for the CD-RW to D. Then I burned a large game onto the four discs it required.
Windows recognizes discs and opens any autorun applications, but if I click "Play" on the splash screen that pops up, it says it "Please insert disc 1" or whatever. This happens with all games. I do not get it.. |

Sounds like you have a damaged cable - they do fail from time to time so I would suggest getting a new cable and setting it back to the way it was.
Also check the jumpers and make sure they are set correctly for master/slave etc. And make sure the bios is set to pick the drives up correctly. |

Strange how a cable could conveniently 'fail' around the same time as I install new hardware and reinstall critical software..

Sorry, what I should've said was; I switched the cable from my CD-ROM with the cable in my CD-RW and it worked.
Even if I use the cable that was in my CD-RW and plug it into my CD-ROM, the system still hangs until I take the disc out of the tray. |

Ok yeah, it was the nForce drivers.
Without them, CD-ROM works fine. With them, system hangs. Solution: put motherboard in microwave and buy one that doesn't pull this crap when I install its newest drivers. |

Glad you found the source of the problem.
BTW: You dont need to keep posting new threads - just edit the last one with your update. It helps the forums stay clean n' tidy.

It's called 'post whoring'.
A common 'newbie' tactic. |

Yeah, so, both of my CD drives read and autorun now, but when I go to run the program from the autorun screen it tells me to insert the correct disc.
What's with that? |

Is it a burned copy of a game?

Hi eLiterate,
I had the same problem with upgrading firmware to my lg gcr-8523b Cd Rom. When I tried to run firmware I received the same error as you ("Mismatch Protocol between F/W and drive". ) The problem was related to virtual drive (ISO, Alcohol 120%) and after disabling of virtual drive I was able to run firmware. Good Luck, Orvon |
