my barton cooler looked bigger than that, plus with a bad case, low airflow it was crap cooling… 80°C temps at idle

I've had some real horror stories with AMD stock cooling. I don't even bother to try them out anymore. It's just more work when it comes time to scrape off the thermal pad and apply a real fan/heatsink with thermal paste.
If anyone's in the market for new AMD cooling, check out ThermalTake's silent boost series. I ran one on a 2100+ (socket A) for about a year and it's very quiet and very cool. Tomorrow I install the 3500+ version (socket 939) so hopefully it lives up to the same quality as my first one.

my stock cooler was copper core with a thin aluminum layer around it. I just sandpapered most of the aluminum off and its a GREAT performer. Its what cools my Radeon card now.

The stock A64 cooler is pretty good . . . was able to OC from 2000 to 2390 once . . . and it's quiet, too.
Actually looks a lot like that Sempron cooler, but the fan is bigger . . . maybe 1 or 2 other differences too
