2001FP or CRT???

My parents want to buy my monitor so they can give theirs to my sister. So, I will need a replacement. I have been looking at the 2001FP in awe for very long, and want one alot...but I also dont mind having a CRT at all.

What are your suggestions for the top end CRTs? Im looking for probably about a 19-20" viewable (not just size) monitor. I also would like its optimal resolution/frequency to be 1600x1200 and any refresh rate to be >60

The main factor here is price I guess. I really like the 2001FP from what I've seen, but since I dont mind CRTs, if I can get supreme performance and picture from a tube then ill go that route, as it will more than likely be about 1/3rd the price of the TFT/LCD. I will also be going to school with this new monitor, and dorms arent very friendly to equipment, and they will take alot of abuse. I dont want to wreck a $650+ monitor.

I got my Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2040u (CRT) refurbished online for ~$350 (US) shipped.

I don't know if you are really comfortable getting a refurbished monitor, but I couldnt be happier with mine!

It's 22" total size, 20.0" viewable, Flat screen, 2048 x 1536/75 Hz max, 1600 x 1200/85 Hz reccommended, and Optional BNC input (which I use

), and it also has a USB hub built in.

If you can find one like I did, I'd say to snag it, otherwise, the retail price on one of these puppies is over $1000 (ouch!)

Image quality/colors are amazing, by the way (I see details in my games now that I could never see before on my Sony Trinitron 17")

Hmm you also may want to think about the fact that dorms are limited on size too.

Yea, that thought crossed my mind too. So many decisions!

where did you get that monitor refurbished? Is it a regular vendor or an ebay-type deal?

but what is the difference between the 2040u and the 2060u?

edit2: eh. now that i think about it, i dont think that monitor will fit on my current desk. the deepest it can be is 19" (which is the 2040u's limits). I dont really want to crowd my desk, and size will be a factor in my dorm like necro said. also, it only comes in white

Well, It's just an idea I thought I'd send your way!

In all reality, I don't think the footprint of it is very large at all, comparitavely to it's size, but then again, I don't have a good picture in my head of how much room you are working with...

The difference between the 2040 and 2060 I think is mainly just a lack of the BNC Connectors on the 2060u model...

If you do decide to get an LCD Screen, make sure to get one with low response time

After some searching, I found the site I got mine from, unfortunately they are out of stock... look: Azatek

They seem to be a reputable seller of refurbished monitors and whatnot, but I'd stay far away from Ebay when it comes to that type of stuff...

People seem to be less than reputable when it comes to that type of stuff (unfortunately).

I have an Iiyama Visionmaster 454 19" CRT which I'll be trading up for a 2001FP as soon as the cash arrives

The Visionmaster 454's replacement is supposed to be good but they are huge in comparison with the Dell 2001FP. Lots of desk space...

yep and the CRT isnt as sharp either, ive seen them both side by side.

The 2001fp is the best monitor available atm.

I've seen this used alot...from what I remember it's a pretty good monitor...only problem is, if i cant find a better price than that anywhere, I might as well go ahead and get the 2001fp

it's looking more and more like I'll be getting the 2001FP...there's alot more choices than I thought there would be, but anything will be better than my 19" NEC 97F i have. this monitor destorts when different amounts of white are shown on the screen, and it also has some color splotches in a couple of areas (not really THAT noticable, but still).

Zardon, do you run your monitors at 1600x1200? at that resolution does it get the full response time and and the full color depth as well? I just want to be sure before i pick one up

The 2001FP is really worth the price and won’t disappoint. And don’t worry about the refresh rate being only 60Hz; it doesn't affect LCDs like it does CRTs. In fact your eyes will thank you very much as there is no strain on them like on a crt(HUGE difference if you use it a lot). I've been using one for well over a year and have never had an issue with it.

I run mine at 1600x1200 and 1200x1600 secondary for portrait mode, great for surfing.

As dipstick says, just put the ghosting issues out of your head with this monitor, ive never seen a problem with it and any game yet. perfect and the clarity has to be seen, no matter the CRT.

its also 24 bit so you dont get the banding normally seen on lower end tfts.
