Would you.....
Ok this is my situation and I'm wondering what each of you would do, I am currently running a P4 2.8 overclocked to 3.2 on stock air cooling with a Gig of Ram on a P4P800 Delux Motherboard. I'm wondering if it would be a worthwhile switch to go to an Athlon 64 3000+ probably on an Nforce3 Mobo with the same PC4000 Ram I've got and overclock it ass much as I can with a nice copper cooler. Would you guys do that? I like the Idea of 64 bit, but mostly I'm going to be playing Games, UT2K4 and other games built on the unreal engine mostly, although playing a bit of FarCry right now also, I do some Photoshopping and using Pagemaker and illustrator but very rarely, and some limited video encoding once in a while, mostly this is my DH surfing game playing rig. My video card is a 6800GT AGP. I have to get a new mother board and processor for a rig I'm building for a friend I've got around 275US to spend on the mobo and processor give or take a few dollars, so I'm wondering what would you guys do? Stick with the P4 or go with the Athlon 64? BTW my buddy doesn't care if he gets an A64 or a P4 (discounted) so it's my decision on this.....

....personally, i'd go 64 just because of the advantages over your current aging hardware... nothing like new stuff.... do you have HT support?
games... it's been well known that the p4 and 64 bit are pretty head to head ATM.... with the edge sometimes being the 64 bit and others p4.. .depending on how things are handled... I'm a little on fence on this one though..... But i'm just about to fall over on 64 bit side due to it being 64 bit, 3000+ being highly overclockable (939)

pick up a 3200+ winchester (have them at ZZF for a mere $180 or $190 i think). MSI K8N Neo, and an XP-90 or Hyper6 then overclock to 2.5ghz+. You'll love it, these new chips have even hit 3ghz on air whcih absolutely rapes a P4.

I seriously doubt you'll see any kind of performance increase...It will just be something for you to tinker with for a couple of hours

If I were you I would just wait a year or so then upgrade to the a64 939 mabey get a nforce4 SLI later down the line. You are not going to see anything major if you switch now and your rig looks like it runs todays games just fine.
(Well if you got that going on with your freind i would give him the p4 and go with a64)

The new 90nm Winchester s939 Athlon 64's can overclock quite a bit, and OC'd like that it would definitely be faster than a P4 3200 in games. This is your gaming rig, and a high-clocked A64 paireed with a 6800GT would be kick-ass for gaming.
Any way, you can build it, and run them side by side for comparison, right?

Hmmm, true Vampy, I'm gonna see what I can get with this new RAM for an overclock, if I can find a 3200+ for around $180 I will change, cause it'll be cool to have 64 bit support and more learning experience.... BTW judas this does have HT...

uh, didn't know for sure....
In any case, if you were to run stock... you'd probably see a decrease... but knowing you and what your piling into the rig.... it'll oc very nicely AND produce a very good wallop...

i'd go Athlon 64. many more games play better on Athlon 64 rigs than p4 systems, although there are a few games out there like MOH:PA, and EverQuest II designed to work best on p4 systems that support HT. the only downfall to going the A64 way is that the times you do your photoshop things and pagemaking, it will probably run best on the p4 set up.

Checking benchies for Games it apears as though the 3500+ blows away the P4 3.6 in just about any game out there, so if I were to get a 3000+ or a 3200+ and just get it up to 3500+ speeds I'd be quite happy as the highest I can get my current P4 is 3.36, which isn't bad for a 2.8
