dial up modem problems

any help would be appreciated, i got a modem that is dialing the number but but doesnt connect to the remote computer, the modem is working through hyperterminal and connects, in the device manager it says all is good, i uninstalled and reinstalled with the driver from the cd i got, same problem. My service provider say its the modem thats not working proberly, since i can connect no problem with my laptop. The modem is only 3 days old and seems to be ok through all the tests so what could the problem be..?
