Does changing virtual memory help out with fps for games?
Ive been trying to search through the forums for answers but still not sure if changing the virtual memory around will help out my fps.... currently im playing hl2 and vampire:bloodlines, hl2 is fine but vampire bloodlines is a lag fest for me and im trying to figure out how to tweak it and people seem to mention virtual memory to boost their fps though im not sure what i should do with mine.....
I got 512mb PC3200 ocz ram, i got 2 harddrives but not with raid, also only got about 5 gigs of free space on the primary.... Any idea what i should set my virtual ram to, to boost my fps in games and would that also effect doing regular stuff like microsoft word and all that? Thanks alot... |

It's usually best to set your virtual memory at a fixed number. Otherwise windows will change the size of the pagefile whenever it feels necessary. I currently have mine set at 1.5gb. You may also consider upgrading to a gig of ram.
There is currently a stuttering bug in the source engine. This effects HL2 and vampire:bloodlines. Supposedly valve is working on a fix for it. |

The virtual memory manager will also eat up processor usage, as it is another task running. either clear off a good bit of space on the primary, or move your page file to the other HDD...that should fix it a bit, as it sounds like it is having to skip around the disk because of a shortage of space.

if you really don't WANT ANYTHING TO WORRY about.... making a partition 5gb and setting min to 768 or 1024 and max to 4096... will leave windows and the partition all the room you'd need....

Ummmm I use CachemanXP, it manages all my paging and cache, perhaps this can also help you.
Website CachemanXP is a system service designed to improve the performance of your computer by optimizing several caches, auto-recovering RAM and fine tuning a number of system settings. Auto-Optimization makes it suitable for novice and intermediate users yet it is also powerful and versatile enough for computer experts. Backups of settings ensure that all user modifications can be reversed with a single click. Due to the system service nature it requires Windows NT4/2000/2003 or XP to run, uses minimal resources and virtually no CPU time. The help file includes a screenshot based system performance guide.

Fiddling with the Virtual Memory will have no effect on framerate.
