Setting up a LAN Help
I have someone over at my house that brought his computer. We are trying to figure out how to set up a LAN so that we can transfer files from his computer to my computer.
How exactly do we do this? Please help, asap.

You'll either need a home "router" (Linksys, DLink etc) or get a cross over cable and have it PC to PC.

turn DHCP on on both machines(set ip and DNS to 'automatic') plug them into ports 2 and 3(some routers use port 1 for WAN, if yours has a WAN port you can sue 1 and 2)
then simply type in your friends IP in IE and it'll show everythign he ahs shared....and copy away

you need to use the same workgroup name and usernames/passwords. dhcp should be the default if you didn't mess around with the tcpip settings.

start, control panel, network connections, richt click the connectionyou want (LAN, not 1394), properties, click TCP/IP and hit properties, set it to obtain IP and DNS automatically, hit ok.
Start, run, type cmd, hit enter, type 'ipconfig/release' hit enter, wait for it, the type 'ipconfig/renew' now you should be running in DHCP and should be able to share files, internet connections, and frag

i'm going to assume (yes.. bad idea).... that you have both have windows XP
Make sure both machines are either connected together with a single cable that is CROSSOVER ... OR.... both connected to a router/hub/switch with normal network cable... (make sure the switch knows that both machine are there) Go into my computer and right click on any thing you want shared and select Sharing & Security at which point it'll bring up a window .. click the "i under stand that risk" and then click SHARE anyways IF it tries to pop up a windows guid of sort, check the settings you want, (if you want to allow whomever to change files on the hardrive instead of READ ONLY... check that option to)... if you don't want to share an entire hardrive... go into that drive and select the files or folder you want to share (do this one either machine you want to do it on) Next your going to want to make sure you have the same Workgroup name or else it's a little harder to get working... Right click MY COMPUTER and hit properties.... go to COMPUTER NAME and click the CHANGE button at the bottom.... select workgroup and change it to something easy to remember... DO THIS ON BOTH MACHINES AND REBOOT apon starting up.... you should be able to go into the MY NETWORK PLACES and within 5 seconds, it should start showing you what is shared on the other machine.. and vice versa from there if you want to make it more permanent.... go into MY COMPUTER hit the TOOLS.. and select MAP NETWORK DRIVE browse through the network places and select the folder or drive you wish and pick a letter...... hit ok and boom, you've got a instant connection to the other computer sitting in MY COMPUTER... also, doing this should guarantee no problems playing games together LAN wise....
