Captain EBD is on a distinguished road

Rounded off Component Speeds/Sizes

How come computer hardware/accessories such as (cpu, ram, hdd, thumbnail jump drives, etc) are all rounded in size and speeds?

For example, my 80GB HDD - true size is 76.3GB
my thumbnail jump drive is 128MB - true size is 117MB
etc...

I can see how rounding off a little like my cpu is 1.4GHz true is 1.38GHz - thats understandable, but have a HDD rounded up 4GBs+ and a thumbnail drive rounded up 11MBs+ just dosn't seem RIGHT.

It's not actually rounded, they don't account for formatted space, and some calculate on 1000k and not 1024k etc. It's bad market strategy by storage manufacturers really.

actually if you want to get technical.... you could complain about the CPU speeds..... down to the hz range....

it's marked as 1.4ghz which is

1400000000hz

you said it's actually 1.38ghz and its exceptable? ok.... that's

1380000000hz ESTMATED

you could easily complain in the similare fashion as the hardrive... i know alot of people have..

considering this,

80gb HD that is actually after all is said in done, 76.8gb

lets bump it up to TB now shell we?

0.080Tb hardrive, that actually is 0.0768Tb ... pretty insignificant now IMO...

expand it....

80000000000 Bytes hardrive

you actually have

ESTIMATED
76800000000 Bytes (ad a few million bytes to that as the number is MOST LIKELY higher )

it all kinda works out... the HD and memory size companies work out there strategies differently... like Craig mentioned... some include the exact 1024 bytes per 1kb were as others just round it down to 1000 bytes per 1kb...

it's mostly due to bad marketing and the use of decimal system instead of binary system as craig said.
