Holy shit Robert, that's a great idea, I'm going to look for one in the uk, load up a portable linux distro and finally check it out without sacrificing a hdd for the privilige. Bloody good idea that man. Thanks.

The usb 2 versions are fast. I've had a 256 for about 9 months now. My friend is hooking me up with a 1GB, so we'll see how that one is.

I still have a floppy, but I need it for my raid controller drivers. I dunno what MS is thinking with that.
flashdrives are one of those things that you wonder "how did I ever live without it?" Every tech I know has at least one, if not more. They are pretty fragile, so don't bang them around too much. I know guys that have it as a keychain, but they don't last too long like that. some guys have better luck than others, but I don't want to lose my data. Make sure to check the security features as well. encrypt any sensitive data. flash drives are super portable, so that makes them that much easier to lose or steal. my friend just had his flash drive stolen. unfortunately he didn't encrypt his data. we'll have to wait and see what happens now.

This particular model does transfers of 3500 KB/s reading and 2000 KB/s writing, according to its website. There are fast ones read at 20 MB/s, write over 10 MB/s. Medium ones do like 10 MB/s read, 5 MB/s write, as far as I know.

Fast or not (all the computers I use are USB 1) they are soooo convenient - I just do something else constructive while it goes. We just got Lexar 1g thumbdrives here in the shop...
Edit: moved a 310Mb mpg file in about 7 minutes - USB 1 speed. Coffee time...
