Upgrading: One Step at a Time
Due to budget constraints, I've been in a situation where I've been doing some upgrading just one step at a time over the past few months.
First, I upped my RAM to 1 GB using 2x512 Single Channel DDR 266. (I'll be changing this on the next upgrade to PC3200 DDR (400 MHz).) The next step was to get a nice upgradeable Motherboard. I opted for an ABIT VT7 which is a very affordable VIA-based board using Intel 478 Pin architecture. It supports multiple FSB configured CPUs. (One additional consideration was to be able to utilize AGP 8X for my 9600 Pro.) My most recent upgrade (today) was to install a P4, 3.2E CPU with HyperThreading technology and 800 FSB. It also has 1 MB L2 Cache! (Over the past few months this computer has gone from a P4 1.6 -> Celeron 2.6 and now to the current CPU.) I was quite impressed when I ran 3DMark2K1SE and saw an increase of over 4000! points by only upgrading to the current CPU. This is at Default settings for everything....nothing overclocked. I then ran 3DMark2K3 and saw a slight increase....apprx 100 points. This, however, didn't surprise me at all since FutureMark has restricted their newer tests to the performance of the VPU and not to the overall system. However, the 100 point increase could be due to a much better rate of data transfer between the CPU and the VPU. It'll be interesting to me to see what differences occur when I put in the 1 GB of PC3200 in about a month or so.

However, I wouldn't want to go to a 9500 because it doesn't have full DX9 support, right? |

With a 9800pro Dyre, your scores should at least double. The 9500 is a DX9 hardware card too, but not as snappy as a 9800pro.

.... indeed... going from my 9600np to a 9800 pro more then doubled my results.... i was hitting anywere between 2000-2200 3dmark 03 marks... then i poped my 9800 pro in and cranked out a solid 5500-6000
Same results for all the games.... actually more then double seeing as i'm getting well over double with additional settings enabledl ike AF and AA

My work doesn't even sell any of the 9800 cards anymore
. Reason why, is cuz they figure if people are going to get a high mid-range card, then they can spend an extra $50 and get a 6800 vanilla. At my work, it gaming cards go from 9550, 9600 128Mb/256Mb, 9600xt, 6800 vanilla, 6800GT, x800pro, 6800 Ultra, x800xtSad really, the 9800 was an awsome card. |

still imo.... you can still run just about anything at full 1600x1200 with and high quality settings.. or notch it down a little to add extra AF or AA

the first generation 9x00 series were awsome. If i still had my 9700pro, i'd hang it up on my wall just to say that it was the flagship of it's day

9700 pro
I got an ATI 9700pro refurbished on eBay for $125 USD... worked out to be about $160 Canadian, which was half the price of a new 9800 Pro a few months back.
I'd rather have a 9800 pro, but I couldn't pass on that type of deal. Works quite well on my rig (which is pretty low end now) for HL2, CS:S, etc. Doom3 makes my computer cry though.

doom 3 requires alot out of anybody's system. It also plays best on the 6x00 nVidia cards.

I was able to get my 1 GB PC3200 today from Fry's Electronics. They had a special on Kingston 2x512 MB in a package for $149.99. Then there's a $30 mail-in rebate that makes the final cost $119.99.
So far, without any other changes, 3DMark2K1 increased over 1000 points from my previous test. |

Bah! Fry's has some good stuff, but hardware is hit and miss as to if it works or not.
