Cold Boot issues...

Now I am certain this is probably one of those odd issues that only come up in a blue moon - but I am currently having issues with my computer upon that has only recently been occurring. Here are my specs:

Antec TruePower 550 PSU
Intel D865Perl
Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz (512 cache)
2GB PC3200
ATI Radeon 9800XT
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum
Western Digital 160 hard drive
Western Digital 120 hard drive
Windows XP SP2
All of this slapped into a P160 Antec Case

The issues seems to occur whenever the computer has been turned off for awhile. Upon bootup into Windows, the computer will refuse to operate as it should (running extremely slow) there are atapi errors dealing with the device ide at port 0, disk reading errors, and failed services... but if the computer is left on, then restarted the computer runs perfectly. This made me suspect the 160 hard drive, so upon running the Diagnostic utilites sure enough, bad blocks were found.

Yet being the suspicious bastard I am, I suspect that this could only be tip of the iceberg. When the computer is turned on early in the morning the temp reported by the attractive P160 Antec case (oh boy advertisement) reads around 22 celsius in the hard drive area and 27 in the cpu area - this being an air cooled unit I would be rather pleased with this - but this is when the issues seem to be occuring. Once I restart the computer 'after letting it warm up' to 25 celsius hard drive and 35 celsius CPU area the computer runs fine.

Odd I know, but this could mainly be an issue with the main harddrive and I am only applying the heat, or lack of, to the cause of my problems. But could this be an issue with the mainboard or the PSU? Both currently seem to be cheaper than purchasing a new hard drive.

Just so you know this computer is completely free of spyware, trojans, virii, etc.

How do you have the hard drives set, as far as their jumpers go? One set as master, the other set as slave?

If so, try changing them both to Cable-Select (CS), and test them like that.
(The drive connected to the end of the cable will be master, and the one connected to the middle connector will be slave.)

Let me know what happens.

When I built the system, I set the hard drives jumpers to cable select, the master drive is WD160, and the slave is WD120. I have had this for awhile so, this is just a recent issue (started November 28 to be precise - which could be a sign of 'act of god').

OK, try setting them to Master and Slave then.

After it has been off for a while, try turning it on, and then rebooting immediately after getting into Windows. If it works right after the reboot, that will eliminate the temperature concern you had, as the system will still be cold.

But the bad blocks issue is the most serious one I'd think. If the drive is still under warranty, look into getting a replacement.
