Since last week my DVD-ROM drive needs more and more time to seek after my CDs, it's a Pioneer 6/32x DVD drive (slot-in model)...
Is my drive dying?????

Nope, I did nothing at all, cos I put five or six CDs: no problem, the next one: too long seek times... CDs are OK (no fingerprints, grease, trash... on them)
That's why I didn't clean the lens.......

Uuuummm I've noticed the same thing on a couple of my drives also. Seems to me because of all the programing changes lately ie. WinXP DX9 SP-1 that some drives don't like reading some cd's.

My friend's old DVD drive did that, but with CDs, after a while it couldn't read CD's anymore...never knew why, cleaned it, checked internals...dvd's played fine, just no CDs....

So, it might be a problem inherent to the age of my drive? I think I may again spare some money...
I'm tired to buy new stuff for my computer......... ![]() My computer isn't the fastest, but it has cost me more than some entry-level servers....

I use a Pioneer 106s slot fed DVD-Rom, got it for about 60 bucks from newegg...it's really quiet to, hate to see you spend money though, I know how much it sucks to buy stuff when your computer for some unknown reason just doesn't work right anymore.

Sorry, Driveā¬, but I live too far from you....
![]() I think I'll keep this drive till it can't read any CDs anymore, change it into a CDcatapult, sell it to some noob, buy me another drive and get the hell out of here before the noob tries my old drive

I'm sorry to tell it, but Reno is right, my DVD can almost not read CDs anymore....
![]() I tried to install Jedi Knight II, it didn't work... I made a back-up of the game (using my DVD drive to read the disk and my writer to burn) using CloneCD and I tried the back-up in my writer..... no problem to install or play, with my DVD drive... nothing (freezing while starting to install)... ![]() So, I can use my drive to read CDs with CloneCD and make exact copies, but I can't do anything else (except playing DVDs).... Bad luck, I should say......

Freedom is a feature.

DVD-ROMs and CD-ROMs have their durability, and when it is spent, you just need to buy new one (that's why I have separate burner and reader, so I use reader just for reading and I don't spend my burner).

My drive is living his last hours, as it seems...
Most of the time, when I put some disc in it, my computer freezes...... Any suggestions on what new drive I could buy (preference, not to loud and slot-in model, cos I like this.... it reminds me to ... hum... )
