build your own graphics card? What if that was the way of things?

what if our graphics cards became like our motherboards. You buy the board and the CPU(or in this case the VPU\GPU) and the RAM and such. I think that would be interesting. You would have to decide RAM brands and RAM speeds and timings etc...and the GPU\VPU would be like the intel vs AMD thing cept it would be nVidia vs ATI(and then weird options such as intel extreme or Volari like with the PC boards that take Via chips or IBM chips or Toshiba chips).

On one hand it seems like it'd be bad but on the other hand, I think it'd be pretty cool. I would love to slap some more ram into my graphics card...then maybe replace the GPU later.

If it costs the same and iot was easy then i guess it would be kinda cool.

yea but the base board would be limited and expensive

The drivers (or lack thereof) would be the downfall of such a method. Would be nice to have so many more options though.

so you'd have graphics board drivers(similar to the motherboard drivers we have now).

I realize there are many reasons why this aint ever happening but it came up to me one day when I was looking at my old voodoo 3 2000 and seeing the slots of extra RAM...then one of my friends soldered extra ram onto his voodoo3 and stuck in a different bios. It was pretty groovy actually. Dunno if it really made a difference though.

i think the biggest problem would be with the memory. when you introduce something such as interchangeble memory the socket itself becomes the limiting factor in transfer speed.

still an interesting idea, would be very cool
