DVD Drives w/o Insane Whirring?

Every time I want to play HL2 or have the HL2 DVD in my drive when I open up Windows Explorer, it does the awesome insane whirring that vibrates the whole case, my desk, my leg, and 2 mole people. It happens with most games anyway but not nearly as bad as with HL2. I'm sure it's "normal" due to the useless copy protection stuff, but it really is annoying.

Anyone know of a good DVD reader or burner that doesn't go quite as psycho on copy protection?

It's not like i'm trying to make ISOs of these things, I just want to play it without causing a minor earthquake.

i've had my LG DVD burner for about 4 months, and i have yet to hear the drive make any crazy spinning noises. its dead silent for most parts.
