My microsoft mouse is the explorer one with the intellieye technology, and was bought a year ago. The mouse uses USB conection and started about 2 month's ago disconecting from the windows xp. It puts off the red light under it and the system indicates a error of unknown device and the cursor stops moving. I am asking for some help on this matter.

Have you tried the mouse on a different computer? How many USB devices do you have hooked up; if a lot what kind of hub?

One of my freinds MS mouse did that, then we tested it at my pc (i have the same MS IE3 mouse) and it did also "shut down" at my pc, so we concluded that the mouse was dead, and did a RMA and got a new one

PS-2 is a dedicated port for mice... why use USB.... It sucks really hard... and... yeah
I've got a MS mouse which had also a wire problem.... every time we pulled too far there was a bad contact and we had no mouse at all!!!!!!!!!

I had exactly the same problem, if you use the PS/2 adapter, though, it works great.

I have to admit, I have wondered the same thing. What is the point in plugging in a mouse, or a keyboard into a USB port... When there are two perfectly good PS/2 connectors for just those particular components...

So, if anyone out there knows what the advantages are. Please let me know.

Yeah iwas another sucker that had one and the problem was easily found:

The damn cable was fecked...

I had to open it 2 times and cut and paste the damn wires until i finaly threw it away(hit the fridge and shatered..)

So i suggest that if anyone wants a MS intelleye get a cordless !!

THe problem is simple if you look at the mouse and notice that these morons didnt bother to fit a rubber flex attachment where the cable comes out of the mouse resulting in the cable breaking very easily especialy if used in a crammed space where it bends alot.

I have also found that it samples much nicer when used as USB, plus you can plug it in even after the computer starts and it'll work, unlike PS/2.

PS/2 is dedicated, so it's faster and because it isn't USB it doesn't use any processing time....

So, for certain games which ask too much of your computer you will get more 'hacked' images on your screen when you use USB, using PS/2 needs less processing time and your mouse won't slow down your computer as much...

I know, first I used USB, when I switched to PS/2 it was a different world... anything was nice and smooth

HMMM....im not sure thats all correct my dear TITAN.

After all if the usb mouse was bad to use compared to the ps2 why in GODS name did they make them ???

In this case we are talking about an "OPTICAL" not a ball mouse.

And im sure if one tweaks his mouse a bit through the settings it has it wont eat up so many resources.

I personaly use a PS2 cordless logitech but having the MicroShaft IntellEye for a while i really enjoyed its smooth movement and gaming ability.


Btw lets see in the future when you wont be able to find a PS2 mouse what you'll do.

If PS/2 Is soooo much better why are almost all custom mice usb and why don't we see more periferals[Sorry can't for the life of me remember how to spell that] (like cameras, pocket pcs and scanners using parallel ports?)

Advantages of USB vs PS2 mice:

1) polling rate

The rate at which a mouse is "polled" for movement is far higher on USB than PS2, allowing for better precision.

2) CPU usage

PS2 mice use more CPU time, especially if you change the rate of your PS2 port to increase the responsiveness and precision of the PS2 mouse. In some cases, extreme movements with a PS2 mouse can result in usage spikes of more than 10% of the CPU time.

3) latency

Granted we're dealing in ranges that run between nanoseconds and milliseconds(depending on product), but in most cases, the PS2 mice have a higher latency between when you start moving the mouse and when it detects that movement.

4) irq usage

PS2 on many boards requires IRQ12, which could otherwise be used for another resource. IRQ conflicts have caused many a PS2 mouse to become erratic.


The best way to decide which you want to do, though, is try each.

If your mouse is slowing down your computer you really need to upgrade. Besides I tried my Logitech Marble Mouse on my computer at work with USB & PS/2. USB is way more responsive; PS/2 was smoothe but slow.

PS/2 is slower but dedicated, USB is cheaper to produce and USB uses more CPU time than PS/2, at least on my computer and that of other people... But I've to admit we use other hardware on our USB (and USB divides it's data rate between all connected hardware) and that on some points I made some errors....

USB may be more responsive, but out of experience: PS/2 keeps ruling (in my eyes I suppose)
