Default Post Very Slow Modem Connections..Please Help!

OK, I posted a message like this right when the forum opened but I never recieved a decent answer besides.."Get your lines cleaned". My connection speed to the internet is 26.4k but mostly lower. This isn't even considered a 56K connection. I'm currently using MSN and havn't achieved anything higher. Anyone have the same problem or solutions to this?

Hate to tell you mike, but the answer is crappy phone lines, most likely in your house, but also possibly from your house to anywhere.

I, for instance, use a 56k v.92 modem and connect at 21.6kbps...even with a 90 buck USR modem, it's signal degredation pure and simple and nothing I can do can get better rates...

Sorry.

BTW, please let it also be stated that my phone lines are nearly brand new (house built merely 6 years ago), so it's possible that those aren't the only lines that are bad...I really wish I could help, I can't even get DSL because of the line noise out by me...and the fact I live 10 miles away from town (and the nearest DSL hub).

Satellite modems are an expensive, and laggy solution...but you'll DL pretty fast.

1. What type of modem, what drivers?
2. How many phones do you have actively connected in your home?
3. What size bowling shoe do you wear?

I personally use lucent winmodems of different brands and have been getting excellent results. I use the 800 series driver & have only 1 actively connected phone in the house, and am happily getting 50K.

Oh, and I wear a size 11 bowling shoe.

Not meaning to sound rude and pushy, but could you look and put down the actual driver version number? It could help a lot.

Try disconnecting 'em all and see if that helps your connection. A bud once told me that every phone that's connected to the same line that you try and connect on can kill your chances at true 56K speeds. Disconnecting them and trying it will help determine if the problem is on your end or if your lines just won't deliver.

Jeeze! You ain't kidding.

The Driver Date is 6/13/2002
And Driver version 5.43.63.6

It seems that Creative has a new version available but even after installing them it seems to stay the same version.

Actual modem (detailed)
V.92 PCI Broadxent Di3631 (Brand = Creative)

Hope that helps. I will probably try that phone idea a little later.

That's usually only for really poorly wired homes, or DSL modems. The channels that a 56k modem uses on the phone line really aren't that affected by telephones.

I'm not trying to be a crudmudgeon, but don't hate yourself if you can't get better connection speed.

Ok I understand where you're coming from Reno, But I have a question now. I'm connected to the internet at 115.2Kbps instead of 26.4! Is this some kind of major error or something? I'm using a 56K Modem and I didnt think they were able to go higher than 53kbps.

33.6 modems connect at 115.2.

and about the phone issue, it depends on the type of phone. i had 3 phones connected to my line and still getting 49.3. once, all i had connected was a single phone, put in the relay in the back of the modem, and if i actually connected i was getting 19.2. try disconnecting all but 1 or 2 of your phones, and connect to the internet. if you get 115.2, start a download from a major site, and it should be around 5KB/s if you're getting 56k speeds.

and the 53k fcc regulation is for BAUD, not BPS. connection speeds on software modems are measured in BPS.

They are not able to do over 53K, the 115.2K you're getting is your com ports speed and not your modems actual speed. I had an old rockwell that used to do the same thing to me and got me REAL excited the first time I did it, but then I noticed the naked ladies weren't loading any faster and hunted up the fix.

For me it was adding "w20" or something to the initialization string, but it's probably a different command for your modem. I'll hunt it up as soon as I get the kids off the sugar rush, bathed, and in bed. (And I used to love Halloween! )

56K info page

56K trouble-shooting page from hell

And finally I tracked down the fix I was talking about for my rockwell (It was adding "W2" to my initialization string.)

I forgot to ask, but what flavor of windows are you using? 98/ME or XP/2K? I found some XP drivers along with install directions, but I'm not sure if that'll help you or not.

Hope this helps some, I'm still trying to recuperate from my day.
