how "wiped" does it have to be? if you want to just kill the partition information, use zap. zap is super fast. if you want clean, try killdisk.

he wants it to be completely erased so theres absoluetly nothing on it, then he wants to reinstall windows. Is there any way to figure out which drive it is, without opening the case?

with killdisk, once i use it can i just put in the windows cd or do i need to do other stuff?

only hdd's ive ever wiped were maxtors and they had a program that was just one click and then put in the windows cd so i have idea what i should do now

if you just want to clear the partitions, use zap. download and extract the file and read the readme. killdisk is a zero fill program, so that data can't be recovered. since you're just going to reinstall over, use zap. it's way faster. boot from a win9x floppy, run zap, done. after that, it's like a brand new drive.

you should open the case and make sure you got the right drive. I would go so far as to disconnect any drives that you have important data on.

You can just boot off your WinXP CD and delete partitions from there and format.

that's true, but zap would get rid of any overlay software also.

I use killdisk on my HD's when I want to wipe them. It does take some time to run it, but it isn't a "painfully" long time, like hours long or anything for a 30gig drive. You don't need to do anything special after using it, just toss the Windows install cd in and your off.

Possibly there is some incriminating evidence on there since he wants to "wipe" it...

it depends on what he is really intending to do. If you want to "scrub" the drive, then killdisk is what you want. If you need DOD class scrubbing, then that's a whole other level.

For wiping to DOD standards we use Norton's Ghost.
