Ping problems

Right, where to begin...

Basically, i have a problem with my internet connection and i have tried all sorts of things to try and sort the problem out. The problem is, i'm on a 1 meg line with 256k up. However, when i try to go onto gaming servers, my latency is always hovering around the 100m/s mark, no matter where the server is located or how i configure the upload and download rates within the game. This is strange considering the fact that when i was on a 512k connection, i got a latency of 30m/s. I need some ideas as to how i could rectify this problem. I have listed below the things i have tried to look into...

1.

I have tried upgrading the firmware on the router to see if this had any affect on the connection but unfortunately it had no effects whatsoever, was worth a shot.

Sorry if some of this data is irrelevant, i just thought i should include as much as possible.

In the above tracert and pathping's, the strange thing is that even when the maximum latency on one of the hops is only 70, i still get a ping to the server of 100.

Any ideas on what i could do to improve this would be greatly appreciated.

it's an adsl connection, i e-mailed the isp sayin could they boost the signal and clean the line, i got a message back saying that i needed to speak to BT, which i did and they said it didn't need to be done. They said to change the router to the primary phone line in the house (not the extension) which i've done and it hasn't made any difference

the internet connection between you and the ISP and the rest of the world is like driving a car down a road..

The faster you go, the more likely your going to go flying off the road, possibly when you upgraded, the extra speed ended up producing more errors in the connection, more pot holes if you will. You guys wouldn't happen to have the BBB or Consumer affairs would you? (i'd phone them up and get BT nailed with a big lawsuit or something)

I'm no expert but by the looks of the ping getting high already at traceroute points 2 and 3 wich should be the internet provider I would guess that their service just isn't better than that. I don't know if the quality of the phone line or nearest service box should affect pings like that, but perhaps that's another possibility.
