Asus A8V + Radeon cards?

I've got a 9700pro and an Asus A8V rev 2.00 939 Athlon 3000+ setup.

If I configure the 9700 pro to be AGP 8x, i can play HL2 or CS:Source for anywhere from 2-20 minutes before a hard reset happens. Stepping it down to 4x and I get rock-solid stability.

Just wondering if anyone else has had similar problems? Is it 9500/9700 specific, or is it all ATI cards? Some googling has suggested Asus and ATI just don't like eachother that much in terms of AGP performance, I don't know if that's true or not.
