SATA 160 GB Samsung HD = $99 @ MicroCenter
In case anyone is ready to make the switch to SATA HDs and hasn't already, MicroCenter has a special deal right now on the above detailed HD from Samsung for $99 US. No rebate involved. This is an over the counter price.
I've had a Samsung 40 GB HD in my system along with other drives for 2 1/2 years. It's performed admirably for me as a storage drive after being a system drive for a few months. The drive comes with a 3-year warranty to boot. I installed the SATA drive last night as my new system drive and, after a bit of researching, figured out how to get my system to boot to it after I connected my previous IDE drives. The secret was to NOT connect the IDE HDs to the IDE 1 channel. Connect them to the IDE 2 channel and put your CD/DVD devices on IDE 1. THEN, very important, make sure you have the boot sequence include your HD first before a CDROM device. We'll see how it goes over the next few weeks. But, so far, I'm pleasantly surprised. However, my XP Home machine STILL takes longer to boot from a cold start than does my 98SE machine. 98SE beats it by at least 20 seconds or so. (This topic posted in another thread.) |
