Click on the "Processes" tab of the TM,
and look at the "CPU" Usage column for the process other than the System Idle Process, What is the name of the process that is consuming the highest resources ? |

are you talking about alt-tabbing out of the game to check.....Or does it happen when you totally exit out of the game?

"System" is the Windows System database file which stores all data regarding local hardware settings. Often known as the registry, this file represents what is shown in regedit as 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE'.
the System process consumes a large amount of processor time is 'usually' caused by a device driver that is running in the context of the System process. also can be one of the program you have running in background that inserts itself into the idle loop, this problem is usually seen in program like a CPU cooler program. -- try using a program called "Process Explorer" (sysinternals.com) to identify the location of the thread, maybe you can find the device driver that causes this problem. ![]() -- Last edited by Ctrl-Alt-Del; Feb 4, 2005 at 08:07 AM. |

anyway, What are the name of .sys, .exe or .dll in the "Start Address" column that using high CPU ? i think, this'll tell you the name of the driver. then you can try to find an update version or give this info to the Dell supports. i hope the problem is caused by one of the device driver and you find a fix for that.. |

Hi Ctrl-Alt-Del. I ran Process Explorer twice. Once before the prob happens and after it happens. I did screen shots of before and compared them to the after. Dunno if that made sense. I'd like to post screenies, but seem to be having probs. Following your above screenie, I came up with two threads under Start Address that seem to be the busiest.
ACPI.sys+0x10b10 being the busiest ntoskml.exe!ExQueueWorkItem+0x2f being next I can post screenshots on my webspace if you'd like. I forgot to mention that in the before screenshots, the above threads were "quiet" with no cpu usage. |

try releasing/unloading DLLs of the Explorer.exe before and after playing game. and see. i mentioned how you can do it above. i'm not even know it'll do any good. but try it. also like i told you before try not to terminate any process before starting the game. that "seems" the problem is not came from the vid card driver but the Windows itself. and i don't think this has anything to do with adware/spyware but you never know. i could be wrong. acpi.sys = ACPI Driver for NT ntoskrnl.exe (not the ntoskml.exe like your post) = NT Kernel & System i'll have to see some of these info later. if i found anything at all i'll post. |

pls report back so i'll have something from that to go on..
anyway, if the cause of the problem is a virus in system or any background program then i'd say that you should see some of the high CPU usage on some other period.. since the problem never happen before starting game --and it's always happen after the game --and then you continue to get a long period of high CPU utilization. i think, this might has relating to heat increase on the system after playing game. this problem was found on some laptop computers, under high CPU loads that cause heat increases, 'Windows 2000' may incorrectly begin switching the cooling policy from Active to Passive, and this can cause the high CPU utilization. the problem does not occur with the Always On power schemes ,that said. and i've seen that the fix for this was also includes the Acpi.sys and the Ntoskrnl.exe. so, try setting your system Power schemes in the Power Options Properties to "Always On". (never turn off monitor, HDDs and system standby) and see. also, try this.. leave you computer for a good period of time. without starting any game, but maybe run a complete virus scan, then run a complete disks defrag, and see if the CPU usage ever rise to 50-100 percent and remain high after that. |

i just clicked on it, no problems. if it srill does not work for you do a search for registry mechanic(you want vers4) or pctools.
