SATA Problems
I'm feel a little silly asking this question, but I'm having problems loading windows on my computer. I'm trying to load Win XP Pro on a WD Raptor 36 gb HDD. When I start loading windows and I get to the part that asks you to press F6 if you have any third party drivers, I press F6 but never get to a point where I can load the Sata drivers. I'm trying to load Win XP Pro on the Raptor HDD which is connected to a Abit AA8XE Fatal1ty. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help in advance.

have you tried installing windows w/o pressing F6? On my Abit IC7-G board, i do not need to install the SATA drivers, only the RAID drivers for my RAID 0 set up. But some boards are different i know.
Does it ever ask you to insert the floppy disk after you push F6? |

Thanks for answering my question, CD. No, during the installation of windows, I'm never asked or told to insert the floppy disk that contains the sata drivers. Got any ideas?

well, the way it's supposed to work, is that after you push F6, there will be additional files installed to be able to install the RAID/SATA drivers. Once the files are installed, it will bring up a menu telling you to insert a floppy disk into your system. After that, you'll be asked to install the proper driver(s) from the floppy disk and then once the drivers are installed, you will continue your windows installation normally.
Just had a thought occur to me though......are you sure that you have your SATA (not SATA RAID) enabled, and that your raptor is plugged into your primary SATA controller? |

I'm looking in the Bios on my computer at the moment and in the section for Integrated Peripherals under OnChip IDE Device in the Sata Mode selection there are three choices; IDE, Raid, AHCI. Of those three it is set to IDE. Do I need to change the setting?

i don't know for sure, but I would set it to IDE. But look in your MoBo manual and see what it says regarding IDE vs. AHCI.

The manuel says;
[IDE]: The on-chip Serial ATA served as IDE Mode. [AHCI]: The on-chip Serial ATA served as AHCI (Advanved Host Controller Interface) mode for advanced performance and usability. Wadda ya think??? drwho

i would go with AHCI mode then. If that don't work, then use the IDE mode.

I would reckon that it needs to be set to ACHI but I could be wrong.
imo IDE would be for running SATA enabled optical drives but it could be used for single SATA disks while ACHI might be for RAID setups with more than one drive. Make sure your drive is plugged into the correct port as well. That will be the one next to the southbridge chip and not the ones at the bottom of the board. Once that is setup, you will need to make sure that the on-chip device is set to the top of the list in the bootable devices order in the BIOS. When you are asked to hit F6, do it quick and make sure to keep hitting it until that option dissapears from the screen. I have the same problem if I dont keep hitting the F6 key on my IC7-Max3. |
